Govt to create 300 000 green jobs: Molewa

2012-06-05 22:20

Bloemfontein - The government is looking for partnerships to create 300 000 new jobs in the green economy, Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said on Tuesday.

"Our environment sector green economy implementation plan has this year received a boost of R800m for the Green Fund over the next two financial years," Molewa said at World Environment Day celebrations.

The department would use the funding to attract new and additional investments, to stimulate job creation and to lay the foundations for South Africa’s transition to a low carbon, job-creating and resource-efficient growth path.

Molewa said South Africa was also extending its partnerships to international funding institutions such as the World Bank Clean Technology Fund and the newly established Green Climate Fund.

The country had entered into the Green Economy Accord, which had been called one of the most comprehensive social pacts on green jobs in the world.

Molewa said the implementation of the projects would offer the country the opportunity to close the scarce skills gap in this sector.

"We have observed that it was insufficient and needed to be supplemented by formal training at higher learning institutions."

Molewa said the department would soon launch the first phase of countrywide green hubs, with various satellite and regional operations.

The project would be launched in Mangaung where more job opportunities would be created as part of the department's waste management strategy, which focused also on job creation.

"Waste is wealth and we aim to prove that in line with our efforts to reduce, re-use and recycle waste, we could create job opportunities for all our young people," said Molewa.

    Great news!

      Adrian - 2012-06-06 09:18

I don't want to be funny but if you have R800,000,000 for 2 years, that gives you R400m per year. Divide that by 300,000 and you get R1333 per person per year as a salary... Goodluck with creating those jobs.

      @Adrian - they don't have a clue do they!

Zuma said he would create 500 000 jobs some time ago and nothing happened, except that he got richer.

      Walter - 2012-06-06 06:48

Molewa, what have you done to stop the rhino slaughter except talk??? This fat bird has been eating green stuff and like someone above her, promising hundreds of thousand jobs without knowing how she's going to create them....... except to have "partnerships" to do it for her. Change the government at the next election and get a party in who will create jobs. Viva Helen and the DA!

  • Gerald Jordaan - 2012-06-06 01:39

Another still born baby!! The ANC can't even arrange a screw in a brothel what sh*t about 300 000 jobs!!!

  • Nicolaas - 2012-06-06 03:04

is this now to replace the 500 000 jobs that was supposed to be created by end of this year! Your so stupid to believe this, there is not so many golf players in SA that can accommodate 300 000 youths to be their jockeys!

  • jon.poole2 - 2012-06-06 04:46

So that's enough money to pay each of the 300 000 new employees R111.11 a month over the 2 years. I don't think these new green employees will be very productive, they'll be too busy striking for better wages.

  • Joe - 2012-06-06 05:50

By partnerships does she mean private sector partners to start and operate profit generating businesses that are labour intensive? If so then it is not going to happen, unless there is a plan in place to prevent labour unrest each and every year.
