Groupon backtracks on Windows 8 Pro

2012-10-26 21:03

Cape Town – Groupon South Africa has backtracked on its previous promise that the product which they are offering is the full version of Windows 8 Pro, and not an upgrade copy.

Earlier this week Groupon South Africa announced that it “will be the first to offer the long-awaited Windows 8 Pro Microsoft software at up to 70% off the recommended retail price”.

The company said that the recommended retail price for Windows 8 Pro was R2,000, and that they are offering the product at R599.

When Groupon was asked whether their deal was the “full Windows 8 Pro”, or whether it is a Windows 8 Pro upgrade copy which needed a previous version of Windows, the company’s response was clear: “The Windows 8 Pro deal is the full package that gets delivered in a box to the customers address”.

Colin Erasmus, business lead at Microsoft South Africa, told MyBroadband that unlike previous versions of Windows, Windows 8 will not have retail copies that can be installed without owning a license for an older version of Microsoft’s operating system.

This means that users will need a version of Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 to use their copy of Windows 8 bought on launch day.

It is cheaper to download Win 8 directly from the MS site at R299.

Thats true. except when you pay, microsoft seem to bill you $40 in stead. Which works out to R350 or so.. It's terrible that microsoft are charging more than they're advertising it for but still cheaper than anywhere else. I've never been a fan of groupon tbh. They always over value their deals to make it seem like you're getting a better deal. That no doubt lures in misinformed buyers. Their customer service is shocking and their spam emails are nearbimpossible to unsubscribe from. Removing your email address from their mailing list seems to do nothing.

As already commented below the final price fluctuates as it is dependant on the exchange rate, but still a lot cheaper than what Groupon is offering

Yeah. I also downloaded windows 8 from MS website. Paid R369 for Windows 8 Pro.

Groupon also says Win 8 pro is valued at R2000 (save 70%), which is bollocks. The Microsoft site says: "you can buy Windows 8 Pro for R 529 ERP at a participating retailer".

What is ERP? We use ZAR. ERP = Effective radiated power, used in radio communications ERP = Enterprise resource planning, a system that is used to manage and coordinate all the resources, information, and functions of a business ERP = Ethernet Ring Protection Switching, used in Ethernet networks ERP = European Radio Project, a consortium of radio broadcasters working on a European public radio station. Nope, none of the above seen to quite, oh I dunno ...fit.

ERP = Estimated Retail Price, denise. See also RRP = Recommended Retail Price.

People should say what they mean, instead of using TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms). There are so many acronyms floating around that it's no wonder they confuse most of the population.

What? That say R299. I also found out that the payment method, after filling everything out, is PayPal or Credit Card. Do you know that it is illegal for South Africans to use their PayPal account to purchase things? According to the Reserve Bank we MUST withdraw to our bank accounts and not buy things. Nice one MS!

Paypal is more of a middleman system than anything and I use it all the time. For the majority of my online purchases (pc games though steam) I will use Paypal if there is the option.

Microsoft has totally screwed up the Windows 8 release. Nobody knows what's going on, not even retailers. They've now stated that the only boxed retail Windows 8 will be the upgrades, and that the only standalone installation will be the 'system builder' versions, which are permanently tied to the original hardware. I don't condone piracy, but in this case I'll make an exception. MS have made it impossible for pirates to go legit with Windows 8, and provided no incentive for people who don't currently use Windows and change hardware every few months to get on board.

    windows8 useless.... back on Win7 :)

  • Raymon - 2012-10-27 09:37

Windows 8 is totally useless on a PC, especially for business use. Even that garbage Vista was better. Who cares what it costs, I wouldn't install it even if it was a free upgrade. EPIC FAIL
