Payday blues as online users fume at Absa

2012-05-25 16:16

Cape Town – Hundreds of users were left furious as Absa bank’s online and mobile systems failed to work on Friday.

Users took to Twitter and other social media forums to voice their concerns.

PaulRotherhamZA tweeted, "Annoying to see #ABSA online banking site appears to have been down most of the day. Constantly hanging and telling me "technical error"!”

"Would like to say extremely nasty things about #Absa which include words like bankruptcy, incompetence and a load of swear words #paydayfail," @Chriscaptivate tweeted

@brabambi tweeted Absa online banking useless I am paying my online banking fee every month yet Is been off for the whole day now I missing business.

The bank confirmed the technical problems on their Facebook page. "We do not have a timeframe for a solution currently," the bank said.

"As it is month end and there are critical payments which need to be made, we'd like you to know that we’re being flexible with the trading hours of our entire branch network today, as we strive to attended to our customers,” said Absa.

Absa rolled out an upgrade to its online banking platform earlier this week.

The ageing internet banking platform was in need of an upgrade and Absa rebuilt the platform to be more user friendly, the bank said.

    FNB FTW!

      George - 2012-05-26 08:04

I moved to FNB AND Capitec 4 years ago. A few frustrations now and again with FNB but the NIGHTMARES OF ABSA are gone. May the banking tokoloshe eat them alive till only the shells of their empty buildings are standing only to collapse in a heap of dust with the next gentle breeze.

  • Wimpie.Haefele - 2012-05-25 16:28

Luckily I moved to FNB last week, just need debit orders switch to be completed and I close all my accounts with ABSA

  • TSR01 - 2012-05-25 16:28

The platform may have been outdated, but clearly their servers are too. Upgrade means upgrade, not half-upgraded. (Software vs. Hardware) A pity about this though.

  • ThaBob - 2012-05-25 16:35

Methinks ...... the IT people that you are trying to fire......mmmmmm

      TSR01 - 2012-05-25 16:42

These are not the droids you are looking for. :)

"Come with me if you want to bank" - The FNBnator

      sharon.ackerman.77 - 2012-05-25 17:58

      I agree with you.

      George - 2012-05-26 07:44

No the people; the tokoloshe is had at work in all cANCerous organizations.

      James - 2012-05-26 12:04

The Maria Ramos legacy. Mess up Transnet, mess up ABSA,Mess up....TBA.

  • Bielie - 2012-05-25 16:39

The revenge of the retrenched, unemployed IT nerd who applied for his own job at ABSA and didn't get it.

  • Mark - 2012-05-25 16:42

It's all the "retrenchments" ABSA has been doing, they have no dedicated, go the extra mile, employees left.

      skootzie - 2012-05-25 18:02

      O.o Did they ever?

  • Faizie - 2012-05-25 16:54

    Vamos Ramos

  • Johan - 2012-05-25 16:56

And can you believe that Maria Ramos are still receiving her R50m salary. The bad IT and online banking system fiasco is to me just a mirror of the false leadership and management in ABSA. A good friend who was 2nd in charge of the IT Group at ABSA, left the bank a year ago and he mentioned then that ABSA's electronic banking system is heading for the rocks.

  • alexander.lombard - 2012-05-25 17:00

Maybe the IT department they were bussy fiering/retrenshing wanted to make a statement.

      peter.tony.14 - 2012-05-26 18:07

Can I suggest clicking on the automatic spell check to ensure your comment comes out at least half intelligent?

  • Hans-joachim - 2012-05-25 17:03

What can you do when banks are working reactively and not proactively. That is a top managemnt failure, no foresight, haha aged internet system, hahaha, dont make a person laugh. Carelessness is all I can say

  • jason.joao - 2012-05-25 17:11

    <3 FNB

  • Bomb - 2012-05-25 17:13

Boycott ABSA, left them years ago, now, no bank out there is perfect, but these idiots were the most frustrating to deal with. Now in principle I hate banks, they basically borrow your money to conduct business, and charge YOU for it. Cash is king!!!!

  • craig.a.salter - 2012-05-25 17:13

    Beware the angry I.T guy

  • john.kleyn.7 - 2012-05-25 17:17

Welcome to the world of BEEE and the resultant brain drain. I know of more than capable, educated, competent ABSA staff that has left in their droves due to the employment policies in ABSA. I think you are left with the rejects and the remaining competent staff will surely resign after this debacle. Like to know who got the contract for this implementation.

      Koos - 2012-05-26 06:56

      Gumede's company?

  • vralph.arends - 2012-05-25 17:20

What happen to the test enviroment before major updates on applications and servers.??????? U just dont do updates on live systems without testing it 1st.....

  • vralph.arends - 2012-05-25 17:21

    @Gobsmacked, i've doen the same

  • paula.leech03 - 2012-05-25 17:38

I was with ABSA for over 20 years and moved to FNB 2 months ago. Best decision ever. FNB is so much more innovative in their approach to banking. I buy electricity using the cell phone banking and their phone app is really great and so easy to use.

  • Sidney Gilroy - 2012-05-25 17:40

Left ABSA three years ago. Never looked back. FNB is cutting edge with their online portal and mobile service. And it is true, I know couple of seniors in the IT Department who was retrenched the paswt year to make up EE Targets. Good job ABSA - Now I would like to see you guarantee your customers this won't happen again!

  • Judith - 2012-05-25 17:59

Not surprised by anything Absent bank does - suggest you all move to another one

  • Just_my_opinion - 2012-05-25 18:00

    That UPGRADE was a DOWN-Grade!

  • Riegardt - 2012-05-25 18:03

I hear City Press is going to boikot ABSA

  • rassie.nel - 2012-05-25 18:11

They are still going to charge us an arm and a leg for this poor service that is always like today

  • Sergio - 2012-05-25 18:15

Hi,steve from FNB...Phone me, lets have a chat....

  • Trevor - 2012-05-25 18:21

That was a dumb plan to upgrade your internet banking at the end of the month. Try a planning program when it is a say quieter period of the month. Dummies

      George - 2012-05-26 07:56

You will only do that if you have any care or respect towards your clients. ABSA doesn't. This is a net benefit to them because they held onto the salary money for a while longer. That's how bansters think! They might even do it again. Extra profit is addictive.

  • lambertus.louw - 2012-05-25 20:22

Hmm, another reason for me to complete my move to FNB

  • nicky.enslin.50 - 2012-05-25 20:59

Problem for poor clients, if this causes them to be late with any form of payment (debit orders etc) it will now reflect on their credit record as bad payer and the client will struggle to obtain finance. as if ABSA cares!

  • dave.callaghan1 - 2012-05-25 21:59

    Join Capitec Bank!

  • edmund.roux - 2012-05-25 23:07

I actually used the new ABSA site and it was great, just cause there are a few hick ups don't make it bad. Technology can be like that. I am sure if they push passed it people will enjoy the new site.

      George - 2012-05-26 07:58

Who cares about clients; not ABSA

  • Ian - 2012-05-26 06:25

One day down and all this fuss and annoyance! Unbelievable. All systems break now and again, it's how quickly they come back that is important.

      reg.pitcher - 2012-05-26 14:25

Your correct Ian,all the people moving to Fnb it wasnt that long ago that they were down,it took a lot longer than ABSA to get it up again

  • George - 2012-05-26 07:43

When it comes to ABSA I would tai amy money and run!

  • kobus.jansenvanvuuren - 2012-05-26 07:59

I Also moved to FNB from absa a few months back. The service is fantastic and they keep their promises about lower charges etc. THANKS FNB

  • ferdi.brannekamper - 2012-05-26 08:09

Not surprising with some of the statements of the people who run this bank. That is what happens when you get yourself all tangled in politics and BBBEE instead of the best South African for the job. So used to just ripping of the south african consumer should have listened to the IT guys when the told you the system needs to be upgraded.

  • Piet - 2012-05-26 09:24

All you ABSA users, I have changed to FNB IN 1990 due to crap i have had wit absa. Problem solved. No more problems.....

      Thando - 2012-05-26 13:20

There was no ABSA in 1990

  • carl.hoppe - 2012-05-26 11:52

This was the last straw for me...Goodbye ABSA.

  • carl.hoppe - 2012-05-26 11:52

This was the last straw for me. Goodbye ABSA.

  • Dronkie - 2012-05-26 15:49

After living in the UK for a few years I got used not paying any bank charges. When I came back to SA I refused to pay the exorbitant fees the major banks charge. My solution: Capitec debit card + Virgin money credit card = virtually 0 bank charges

  • Pat - 2012-05-26 18:22

This laughable about ABSA! CAPITEC what a pleasure to bank at this Bank change your bank accounts it is as easy as that. Low banking fees at Capitec as well. ABSA buggered me around a few times with my pension not being paid into Capitec! Then I believe it was human ERROR.. I WOULD NOT SLEEP IF I paid such HIGH BANK FEES THAT ABSA CHARGES!

  • jiri.tichy.52 - 2012-05-26 19:47

You are missing the point good people of South Africa.. Recently announced 160 IT guys are being dismissed sacked given the boot.. well now you see what happens when you become penny wise and pound folish. But secondly ABSA is owned by Barclays and they want to maximise profits sothat more money could be send to UK to cover their debt.. ajaja absa you sold your soul...

  • David - 2012-05-26 21:40

It seems ABSA have retrenched the wrong people, Telkom did this a few years ago and look what a mess they are in now. Absa is following close behind.

  • derrick.vanniekerk - 2012-05-27 00:18

roll out a new system at the end of a month, clever ...

  • jolenevanniekerk - 2012-05-28 08:02

Moved to FNB a few months ago, debit orders are not all moved and we are going to close the ABSA accounts today. SO SICK OF BEING RIPPED OFF and receiving SHOCKING service!!!
