Radiation in Europe - no risk

Vienna - The UN atomic agency said on Friday "very low levels" of radioactive iodine-131 had been detected in the air in the Czech Republic and in other countries, but presented no risk to human health.

The Czech nuclear safety office said that the source of the contamination was "most probably" outside the Czech Republic, and that its information suggested the cause was not an accident at an atomic power plant.

Poland and Slovakia also said that they had detected abnormal levels, although Poland said they had been "100 times higher" in March afer Japan's Fukushima nuclear accident.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had received information from Czech authorities "that very low levels of iodine-131 have been measured in the atmosphere over the Czech Republic in recent days."

"The IAEA has learned about similar measurements in other locations across Europe," it said, without saying which other countries were affected.

"The IAEA believes the current trace levels of iodine-131 that have been measured do not pose a public health risk and are not caused by the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in Japan," it added.

The Vienna-based agency said it was working with its counterparts to determine the cause and origin of the iodine-131, which has a half-life of around eight days, and that it would provide further information as it becomes available.

The Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety (SUJB) said that "trace amounts" have been registered in the air in the past two weeks. The country has two nuclear power plants.

"Although the iodine content in the air does not in any way threaten people's health, the SUJB has ordered a change in the monitoring regime to get as much data as possible," it said.

"We are monitoring future developments of the situation in detail to possibly localise and identify the source which is most probably situated outside the Czech territory. The source of the contamination is not known at the moment."

It added: "We have not detected any increase in the concentration of other artificial radionuclides, which suggests the cause was not a nuclear power plant accident."

Dana Drabova, head of the Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety, told the CTK news agency: "With probability bordering on certainty this is not from a Czech source, and definitely not from our nuclear plants."

In Poland, which has no nuclear power plants, a spokesperson for the atomic energy agency told AFP: "We detected trace levels of radioactive iodine-131 over Poland during measurements taken October 17-24. It was a very low level.

"Readings were 100 times higher in late March in the wake of Japan's Fukushima nuclear accident," spokesperson Stanislaw Latek said.

He added: "Ukrainian authorities informed us they recorded similar trace levels of radioactive iodine-131 during measurements take October 10-20th."

In Slovakia, Vladimir Jurina from the public health authority said levels of iodine-131 were "just about measurable levels."

The values are basically the same as those in Austria, the Czech Republic and other countries. The source is a mystery to us. It's not from our nuclear plants though - we have checked with them," he said.

    According to the US Department of Energy, no level of radiation is so low that it is without health risks.

      The effects of radiation are cumulative, even in small doses, natural or otherwise. Aside from natural radiation, we're living in an artificially radiated environment due to more than 2,000 nuclear tests. We get added radiation from simple things in our homes like cell phones and TVs. The thing is that we live in the modern era where we have advanced in the scientific and medical areas by leaps and bounds, yet with the increase of items that we bring into our homes that give off radiation a growing number of people are on medication, there's an increase in cancer, failed pregnancies, and infertility. So, with the increase in radiation we are already subjected to, any amount of extra radiation, no matter how small, whether natural or not will have health risks to some people.

    This report is false as it uses the "New" method of measuring radiation as opposed to the old Geiger counter:- [A] study [by University of Texas engineering professor Steven Biegalski and researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory] reports that more radioxenon was released from the Fukushima facilities than in the 1979 meltdown at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania and in the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in the Ukraine. The amount of radiation released during the Fukushima nuclear disaster was so great that the level of atmospheric radioactive aerosols in Washington state was 10,000 to 100,000 times greater than normal levels in the week following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the disaster. But of course there is no reason to panic hey?
