SA man posts toenails to Chinese embassy

2012-10-24 09:15

East London - A Grahamstown man has posted his toenails to the Chinese embassy in Pretoria because he is upset with the escalating number of rhino killed by poachers, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Star newspaper reported that Mark Wilby clipped off his toenails, put it in an envelope and posted it.

In a YouTube video, he called on other South Africans to do the same.

Rhino horn is made of keratin, the same protein in hair, fingernails and toenails, but some Asian countries believe it has medicinal qualities.

"It's not enough to say rhino horn is useless," Wilby told the publication.

"We need to find out more about the market, to understand this thing so we can address the demand."

The embassy told the newspaper it had not yet received the mail by Tuesday afternoon.

Terrible thing to kill Gods animals for money.

      denis.gomo - 2012-10-24 10:11

The picture is not a pretty sight but I guess it's justified...it's enough to boil our anger and make us realise how far we still need to go in our efforts to save our rhino populations. One of the best way to do this is instead of sending nails in mail to the Chinese embassy, the SA embassy in China could pay for a couple of awareness campaigns on Chinese television informing the people of how impotent the rhino's sharp horn is in making people horny.

      grant.callaway.50 - 2012-10-24 10:55

What's the embassy's address? Can somebody post that, and then EVERYBODY post it, (along with a drive to send nails in protest of Rhino Poaching) on their Facebook status'?

dear comrade...dont joke, chinese culture is actually far more sensitive to people doing this than western culture. dont forget that over the past couple of years actual chinese and vietnamese embassy staff have been caught dealing in rhino horn OUTSIDE of their own embasies and gotten away because of 'diplomatic immunity'...

  • Sheilan.Clarke - 2012-10-24 09:48

I'm seriously doing this. Just waiting for my toenails to grow. *serious face* We can't let these Asian countries go scott-free. I read an article on CNN.com about what the Namibians did to combat poachers. Our authorities don't wanna do much, so the rest of us should step up.

      Jane - 2012-10-24 11:40

The South African government, has been in bed so long with China, thats why they not really making much effort to stop the Rhino poaching. Wouldn't be surprised if some of their buddies in the ANC get kickbacks.

If you want to post your toenails anywhere, suggest you send to Vietnam not China as it is the Vietnamese not the Chinese who are the main consumers of rhino horn

      demi.cooke.7 - 2012-10-24 10:10

thank you peter - you right, i was a bit confused about the Chinese thing, the Vietnamese started this whole thing, I remember a documentary on it - they created the market

      ed.gutsche - 2012-10-24 11:01

um peter, not really....the chinese market is a far larger market in terms of numbers as they have a million millionaires vs vietnams at about 250000.

This is just a pathetic and disgusting insult on China. Wish he could be arrested on the Crime of Crimen Injuria and charged. Just because some people in China think Rhino horns are medicinal doesnt mean you should send your disgusting toe nails to an embassy representing over a billion people. It is also a form of racial profiling and racial stereotyping

      Jane - 2012-10-24 11:43

Frank, whats disgusting is a country where any animal is considered an asset and can therefore be abused, maimed, skinned alive, eaten alive, and killed for every stupid potion they can think of! And it is not a handful of people who believe in these potions and use them, it is millions and millions of them!

Some South Africans think raping a virgin cures HIV and AIDS and that's why there are alot of child rape in this country but you dont see virgins all over the world protesting by sending our embassies their genitals of virgin animals to drive home their point

      vincent.auret - 2012-10-24 13:31

I agree, sending the genitals of innocent animals is wrong, however, the virgin's of the world are welcome to send whatever else they want - even dog sh%T - to our embassies and government, anything to help get the message home about the disgrace of the rape crisis in SA. Unlike most SA's who are absolutely sick to the core of the rapes and murders, the Chinese/Vietnamese do not seem particularly concerned about our rhino, they are just concerned about scoring a stiffy.

Why are chinese so obsessed with sex and anything that they think could possibly enhance their sex lives? For a supposedly educated nation, that pretty dumb!

  • Andrea - 2012-10-24 11:38

Well if we all partake in this effort at least the post office staff will have something to do! However I would like to send them a whole lot more than just my toe nails!

  • parys.fotograaf - 2012-10-24 12:25

The solution is simple: Cut all ties with these idiots, but sadly politicians at the trough will never do the right thing.

  • Jordi - 2012-10-24 12:25

The Chinese believe it enhances their sexual performance and size!!! The only time it will ever help is if they strap the horn on!!!!! Big ups to Mark im in on this, thumbs up if you gonna join in

  • jackie.m.dickson - 2012-10-24 12:49

This is the cleverest & most simple idea! Well done Mark! You are literally my hero. My nails will be in the post shortly & I will continue to do it until rhinos can live in peace.

  • dante.schoeman - 2012-10-24 14:03

I would really like to know if the Chinese would have killed the Rhinos if they were only to be found in China , China is a very selfish country and only believe in things that will make their country better, not the world. That is why Dolphins , whales etc are victims of poaching. Doubt they would have killed them if they were only to be found in China. But who cares , if its not in China kill it. Doesn't influence our Country.

  • brent.lee.1088 - 2012-10-24 14:14

It is my understanding that the majority of rhino horns end up in Vietnam... Not china.

  • fanie.gerber1972 - 2012-10-24 16:37

Indeed the white Afrikaner male is a threatened species know for for ferocious fighting when threatened, loves Rugby, although some of them have an unhealthy liking of the colour blue - some examples have massively overgrown toenails ( again the the blue rugby team lover lot). Be warned - piss any of them off enough ( blue rugby lover or not) and they will gang up on you and will cause a.) you not to have hands to pick your teeth up with b.) pray that you great grand mother have not been born

  • Sam - 2012-10-24 16:40

That's great! I was going to suggest the exact same thing and Lawrence Anthony alludes to this in his book "the last rhinos". Yes, Vietnam also uses rhino horn, but the Chinese ambassador to SA received rhino horn at her residence in SA and claimed diplomatic immunity! To call her a b1tch or cow, is an insult to b1tches and cows!

  • Peter - 2012-10-24 18:02

Why are we not gathering and demonstrating outside CHinese and Vietnamese embassies and inviting the international media along to publicise this and post on YouTube as well? My clippings are in the post.

  • syphor.zit - 2012-10-24 22:12

Maybe call the the nails (live rhino horn chips ) or is the horn ok when the rhino is dead

  • Blixum - 2012-10-25 08:03

Why only pick on China you chops? Vietnam was the real instigator and originator of these poachings. Give us their adddress as well and we'll send our toe nails and rotting carcasses to them as well.

  • glen.e.huysamer - 2012-10-26 10:27

South African's should start posting all their clipped toe nails to the Chinese embassy, Vietnamese Embasy and any other countries consulate whose nationals are caught dealing in Rhino horn, it is a small price to pay, and a flipping good idea. I am in and I will tell all my friends to do the same, something like this will definitely make CNN and other world news, it is worth doing and I hope these consulates drown in toe nails.
