Smarter lighting could save $110bn

Rio de Janeiro - Efficient lighting would save $110bn a year worldwide, according to a UN-led study published at the Rio+20 summit on Thursday.

Yearly savings in phasing out incandescent bulbs and making other simple changes would amount to around 5% of global electricity consumption, it said.

It would reduce worldwide output of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, by 6% - the equivalent of more than 450 coal-fired power plants or more than 122 million mid-sized cars, it said.

The report was released by the UN Environment Program (Unep) and the Global Environment Facility, in conjunction with the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The figures come from an assessment of 150 countries.

Fourteen countries are to be enrolled in a pilot project to develop national plans to phase in fluorescent bulbs or light-emitting diode (LED) lamps.

Just drop the price of the LED's and we buy tomorrow. There is no incentive for us to buy.

When I can get 'daylight' fluorescent bulbs and when they and LEDs cost no more than a regular incandescent bulb then perhaps I'll go over to them. But I have to wonder what the world will do with all the mercury resulting from damaged fluorescents? Tim Flannery (Australia) recently made a daft suggestion that amalgam-filled teeth be knocked out from cadavers before burial because of the contained mercury - how much more mercury is to be buried in land fill from all these CO2 saving (sic!) fluorescent bulbs? Another case of how trying to save the planet is making our climate problems worse. (See David Owen's book, "The Conundrum")
