Support Table Mountain vote - De Lille

2011-11-08 13:01

Cape Town - Tremendous opportunities awaited if Table Mountain was voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille said on Tuesday.

"We have the privilege of one of the most breath-taking landscapes on earth, a country of sublime natural beauty," De Lille said in a statement.

"If Table Mountain is officially recognised as a natural wonder, it will cement that unique offering to the world. Tremendous benefits await us if we all do our part and come together."

Western Cape tourism MEC Alan Winde said on Monday if Table Mountain were selected as one of the seven wonders, South Africa could see tourism surge by around 20%.

This would generate an additional R1.4bn in revenue every year and support employment for around 11 000 people.

Table Mountain failed to make it onto the campaign's latest top 10 list released this week, but the top 10 could change because voting only ends on Friday.

This list comprises the Dead Sea, the Grand Canyon in the USA, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Vietnam's Halong Bay, Jeita Grotto in Lebanon, Jeju Island in South Korea, the Indonesian island of Komodo, Puerto Princesa underground river in the Philippines, Sundarbans delta at the mouth of the Ganges river, and Italy's Mount Vesuvius.

You can vote for Table Mountain here or SMS to TABLE to 34874. SMSes cost R2.

More votes = more jobs = more rangers = increased safety.

  • Niel - 2011-11-08 13:33

and by the way kliphead, why not move out of SA if u dont support it u idiot

      Craig - 2011-11-08 15:02

Table mountain isn't SA, so who's the kliphead or the idiot, half a dozen better sites in SA alone than that silly mountain. I voted but tm wasn't one of my votes, don't like the political connection in the reasoning for voting for what is actually a plain rather ugly looking flat hill.

  • spiderkzn - 2011-11-08 13:38

That's fantastic, but you need to STOP THE MUGGINGS!!! How can we expect Table Mountain to be a Wonder of the World if there is constant robbery and assault on hikers!??
