Twitter, American Express make a deal

New York - American Express has teamed up with Twitter to allow users to synchronise their credit cards with the micro-blogging site and take advantage of store discounts with a simple tweet.

AmEx said on Tuesday that clients would be able to get exclusive discounts loaded onto their cards by mentioning offers by hashtag on the popular micro-blogging site.

When the cardholder makes the purchase in question, whether in a shop or on a participating merchant's website, the credit is posted within a few days.

"American Express is turning Twitter content into commerce by connecting card-members to merchants and delivering real world value to both," American Express vice chairperson Ed Gilligan said.

AmEx said participating merchants include fast food giant McDonald's, grocery chain Whole Foods, electronics retailer Best Buy, shoes and clothing seller and Swedish clothing retailer H&M.

I like what American Express has done with its social shopping program. To earn a reward, I only have to tweet about a deal I'm interested in. But if I liked a particular deal, I would probably want to tell my friends about it anyway, so I have no issue at all being an advertiser for AmEx. After all, I would've shared my discovery, even if I didn't have to do it. For a more detailed analysis:
