Twitter wades into censorship

2012-01-27 08:32

San Francisco - Twitter has refined its technology so it can censor messages on a country-by-country basis.

The additional flexibility is likely to raise fears that Twitter's commitment to free speech may be weakening. It comes as the short-messaging company expands into new countries in an attempt to broaden its audience and make more money.

But Twitter sees the censorship tool as a way to ensure individual messages, or "tweets", remain available to as many people as possible while it navigates a maze of different laws around the world.

Before, when Twitter erased a tweet it disappeared throughout the world. Now, a tweet containing content breaking a law in one country can be taken down there and still be seen elsewhere.

Twitter will post a censorship notice whenever a tweet is removed.

Dear News 24. On the Homepage of your Website the first picture of the pics on the right hand site of the page. The Flag being burnt by the aboriginals is an AUSTRALIAN FLAG NOT AN AMERICAN FLAG. You are a news channel and do not know the difference between the Australian and US flag. You should probably fix it....

      Josh - 2012-01-27 09:06

Probably because they are from Australia.... Just saying

The editor of this website is literally the worst/laziness editor I have ever seen. I can pick up so many mistakes in articles. Bad spelling & inaccurate facts taking top place.

I wonder if this could lead to Twitter requiring a subsciprtion fee next. Becuase people can circumvent stuff like this with VPNs and proxies, some websites have gone as far to require a subscription to really verify that content is only suposed to go where it is supposed to go.

  • SuzanneGonzalez - 2012-01-27 20:56

Quite frankly & I am very broad minded, some of the tweets posted are frankly worth being censored & deleted.... language, content etc...
