UFO stuns Pretoria residents

2010-07-26 09:19

Pretoria - An unidentified flying object (UFO), which apparently consisted of three bright lights, astounded residents from Booysens in Pretoria for two consecutive nights for several hours.

Engela van der Spuy, 67, who lived in Attie Street in Booysens, contacted Beeld after she watched the strange set of lights on Thursday night for the second consecutive night.

"I'm not saying it's green little space men," said Van der Spuy. "We just really want to know what it is."

Van der Spuy for the first time saw the UFO on Wednesday night shortly after sunset in the western sky.

"I couldn't make out the shape of the object because the three lights were too bright, but it almost had a heart shape because there were two lights on top, a blue light on the left and an emerald green light directly next to it, on the right side, with a big bright white light underneath it which shone straight down," she said.

According to her, the UFO hung in the air for two hours without moving and then, at about 20:30, slowly started moving down, diagonally to the left and still down, disappearing behind the horizon.

On Thursday night, the UFO again appeared shortly after sunset and at 20:30 again started moving down before disappearing.

"I called all the neighbours and we looked at it together, but no one could figure out what it could be. All we knew, was that it definitely was not a star or a normal plane."

Henrico Swart, 19, Van der Spuy's neighbour, who looked at the UFO through binoculars, was dumbfounded.

"It has to have a very strange shape, because even through the binoculars I couldn't make out the shape," said Swart.

"All you could see, were three bright lights."

On enquiry, spokespeople from the Hercules police station, the Johannesburg Planetarium and the South African Air Force had no knowledge of the incident and were unable to explain the phenomenon.

"I don't think it is a flying saucer, because we would've been able to see the saucer shape. This is something even stranger," said Van der Spuy.

While I have not told anyone about this, I saw an almost identical object hovering totally motionless and silent over Windhoek about 2 months ago. I watched the object for about 10 mins with binoculars before it disappeared...

  • To the point - 2010-07-26 09:31

Any photographs taken by any of the neighbours?

  • Nicolette - 2010-07-26 09:40

This is the first time I'm ever going to admit it, but thirty years ago my brother and I saw the same thing. A series of bright lights, stationary in the sky, no visible object shape. They were there and then gone. This is the first time I've heard someone else see the same or similar phenomenon. Looks like we're not alone after all!

  • Galmaker - 2010-07-26 09:40

Booysens is the Roswell of SA. Go and view the residents there for yourself.

  • cyberax - 2010-07-26 09:45

  • Pictures? - 2010-07-26 10:00

didn't anyone take pics or video clips of this event? If so, please send them in to news24 so that they can be posted to the gallery...

  • WitBlitz - 2010-07-26 10:03

What's todays date? If so many people was looking at the "UFO" why is there not a single photo?

  • UFO - 2010-07-26 10:08

We'r not alone! google ancient aliens

  • William - 2010-07-26 10:10

Don't we just love to find reason for justifying "We are not alone out there". I know what it is, and I ain't telling. In fact there is quite a lot of folks that know what it is, but telling would just spoil the fun, now won't it.

  • Rob Dickens - 2010-07-26 10:12

No pics or video? They had time to fetch binoculars, they saw it on two nights and it appeared from sunset to 20h30 for a couple of hours and nobody took a picture?

  • mike turner - 2010-07-26 10:17

All those eager, hawk-eyed people and not a single camera or mobile phone amongst them?? Have another dop, boet.............

  • Markd - 2010-07-26 10:25

It was probably a new fangled Vuvuzela

  • Angela - 2010-07-26 10:28

This sounds like a baloon of some sort. Surely someone took a picture? Lets see it!

  • Gareth - 2010-07-26 10:29

Isn't always so remarkable, that people constantly 'See' these miraculous things, yet no one EVER thinks it's a good idea to take picures of any kind, Next time people, Do yourself a favour and take a some pictures, or no one will believe what you're all talking about, Many a people have claimed, "I've seen a UFO! "OMG" " But, Bare in mind, A few months back (or last year) there were reports of "A green metoer type thing" that was seen in capetown, Durban, Jhb north, south and further north (polokwane)" This was on the news, many people made claims, But not one single shred of substantiating evidence was presented... Need i say more?

  • Ranter - 2010-07-26 10:32

I saw the lights, I was so shocked I had to have a second bottle of jack just to calm my nerves.

  • FACT - 2010-07-26 10:33

  • slimjan - 2010-07-26 10:33

for several hours!!! and no one whipped out a camera or even a cellphone..

  • AJ - 2010-07-26 10:35

I often see bright lights in the sky, they look just like stars and then when daybreaks, they're gone, and then suddenly re-appear the next night!.....Wait a minute...

  • moloko - 2010-07-26 10:35

It is interesting, wonder what is it?

  • Om Don - 2010-07-26 10:38

I don't buy it until is see pictures or videos. For two consecutive nights unbelieveable.

  • Ronel - 2010-07-26 10:39

There are hundreds of weather and communication and enviroment satellites up in the sky. You can see them if you are in the right place/time. The setting sun reflects on them mostly. Remember how we all watched for the "Sputnik" to show up nightly?

  • Garethg - 2010-07-26 10:39

    Oh! I know!
I'll camp out on North CLiff Hill (in JHB ( Randburg)) And watch out for the 'UFO' Maybe I'll get lucky and 'See' this phenomenon! I'll even go so far as to set up a video recorder trough the lens of my telescope (so that when the 'UFO' arrives, It will be a nice good view of our friends...) Or maybe... You know, Just apossiblity, You're all on Crack and should never report un-identified flying objects.

  • Michael - 2010-07-26 10:41

    Pics or it didn't happen....

  • Louis III - 2010-07-26 10:42

Actually, I believe it was merely a SAPS patrol car. Pretoria residents just haven't seen one of those in decades.

  • Cire - 2010-07-26 10:45

The aliens landed at my house and we had a joint. They have a message for SA - "soon the bokke will be as useless as the proteas or even the bafana unless you pick teams and coaches on merit;. Then they flew away.

  • rbgguy - 2010-07-26 10:45

    The drugs don't work...

  • MQ - 2010-07-26 10:49

I saw a similar thing in Cape Town, in the sky above Plattekloof Area, about 2 weeks ago around 10 pm I think. Three white lights forming the corners of a triangle. At first I thought it was a very slow flying airplane, but I watched it for a few minutes and it didn't move at all. I figured it must be a new type of helicopter or something that we haven't been told about, because it was too big to be any helicopter I've seen before. Strange?

  • Johnathan - 2010-07-26 10:54

Gareth, the meteor(ite) that caused the sky over Gauteng and Limpopo to light up with a green light for a few seconds last year was well documented and at least 2 video clips of it (taken by security cameras) exist. I agree with your point on how, in most cases, people don't take pictures or video of these things. You must remember that Booysens is a poor area, but still, those people would at least have cellphones with cameras. And they say it appeared for hours on end for two days...

  • Gareth @ Jonothan - 2010-07-26 11:17

Johnathan, Agree'd, Even poor areas have Public phones,I am sure at least someone who saw it, Would knwo someone in the near area who has a camera/cellphone, So phone them and say "Yo dude, Check out the sky for some pretty lights, maybe we should take a few pictures?
But needless to say, I Highly Doubt it's anything of interest, Because if there was a Space faring object that entered our Atmosphere, it would not simply "Dissapear over the horizon" Because the horizon leads to another part of the world...? So it would constantly be seen by someone somewhere, Secondly, When an Space faring obkect enetres our atmosphere, the speeds at which it enteres would be epic, and it wouldn't "Enter and Hover for a few hours".
Thirdly, NASA (American space station) would have known if something was orbitting/Entereing our atmosphere, There isn't enough scientific evidence of such things.

  • Darko - 2010-07-26 11:31

HAHAHAHA dude, what did you smoke? because seriously you seem to have had a bad trip. Another possible explination, there's sumthing in the water overthere... lol

  • droplet - 2010-07-26 11:51

disco lights, then the song ended and the lights went out....

  • BadWes - 2010-07-26 12:23

They obviously wanted to come abduct some earthlings, saw the Booysens crowd in their Blue Bull t-shirts and decided that collecting moon rock would yearn more interesting results and more intelligent life.

  • observer - 2010-07-26 12:25

Unbelievable how people should be judged by where they live! If you 'know it alls' maybe get out of judgement chair you would know that you can't 'just take a picture' of lights in the sky without the right equipment? Get withit man!

  • Chris - 2010-07-26 12:28

Well laugh if you will, but 3 of us has seen the same type of thing about 17 years ago. Staying in a flat in Hillbrow we had a nice view from the 12 floor across towards Yeoville. The 1 night we noticed 3 lights hovering over Yeoville side. You could not judge the distance to the objects, so it could have been much further, no idea. The lights were about 10cm or so about the horizon (measuring 10cm at arm’s length). We watched the main light, about a 5 cent piece (again at arm’s length), stay in 1 position while 2 smaller lights kept on moving around it. Sometimes it would appear that the smaller lights would merge with the bigger light. We stood and watched this for about 20 mins or so and then got tired of it. After about an hour we checked again and the show was still on. Only after another hour or so, did it disappear. So for the facts, Stone cold sober. 3 people saw the same thing. No plane or helicopter could be in the same place for so long. (If you do even think it was a helicopter, why then was there 2 smaller 1 as well?) There is no lights / buildings that high up in the air, I know we stayed for about 2 years in the flat, and looked at the same view every day. And as for cameras / cell phones etc. Cell phones did not exist then and didn’t own a camera at that stage, else I would have taken pictures. And for the intelligent people who work at Jaguar, (I don’t know why that makes a difference), you believe that you are the only intelligent life form in the universe? How ignorant can you be? Out of 10 billion galaxies (which each have about 10 billion star again), there is only ONE PLANET that has life on it!!! It would seem to me that it would be a great waste of God talents indeed.

  • Max @ MQ - 2010-07-26 12:32

I saw almost exactly the same thing in Cape Town, but it was more than 10 years ago at night. Ive never forgotten it to this day. Three white lights forming the points of a perfect triangle. The lights were quite far away so they looked like stars, but once they started moving you could see that they formed the points of the same object. It defnitly wasnt a plane, because it stood perfectly stationary and than just started moving straight up. No buildup of speed like a rocket. Just a constant speed straight up. I was quite good at Physics during hight school. I understand inertia, acceleration and velocity. The way this thing moved was just wrong. It Was far enough that i couldnt make out what was between the points, but the three points moved in such perfect synchronisation that they had to be connected. Couldnt of been a plane.Planes dont hover then fly straight up. Could of been three helicopters flying in formation. But the speed(straight up) relative to my distance would mean they they were traveling REALLY fast. Helicopters cant climb that fast nor fly in such perfect formation. I was walking home from a friends house and i hadnt been drinking or under the influence. Eventually the lights blinked out as they reached a certain altitude. First the one at the top. then the two at the base. Ive never see it again.

OMG district 9 might happen! oh please spare the the dribble. Its most prob the drone type things from the airforce that they looked like they were trying to figure out how to fly in ct the last week.
