Volcano erupts in Eritrea after quakes

Kampala - A long-dormant volcano has erupted in Eritrea after a series of earthquakes and sent a 13.5km plume of ash into the air, according to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC).

The volcano started to erupt around midnight on Sunday, charts on the website of France-based VAAC indicated.

The remote, arid region, close to the border with Ethiopia, was hit by a series of earthquakes earlier the same day, data from the United States Geographical Survey showed, with the biggest reaching 5.7 on the richer scale.

The Dubbi Volcano - which is located 350km north of the Eritrean capital Asmara and 233km east of the Ethiopian city of Mekelle - is thought to have last erupted in 1861.

The independent earthquake monitoring website, said it might be another nearby volcano nearby known as Nabro that was erupting and carried testimonies from residents in the region confirming the ash cloud.

"The plume from the volcano is covering the whole of Asmara since the morning, but now it is clearing somewhat," one resident was quoted as saying.

Dubbi's ash cloud hit an altitude of 13.5km, VAAC said.

Ethiopian state media warned people to protect themselves from ash.

Ethiopia relocated more than 50 000 people in 2005 after a series of earthquakes and a volcanic eruption on its side of the border. As residents fled, hundreds of their animals were swallowed into crevices in the ground.

The Dubbi Volcano is located in a tectonic triple junction known as the Danakil depression that spans parts of Eritrea and Ethiopia.

Scientists say its spreading ridges, that form the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, may 10 million years form a new ocean and split Africa in two.

Earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, volcanoes erupting in Chile, Iceland and Ethiopia... All this talk of 2012 and end of the world... seems like we are entering some interesting times...

      So What? - 2011-06-13 21:01

Spiky, some will shoot you down, but read Luke 21:9 to 10, and Matthew 24:6 to 14. Either someone took one hang of a good guess and it is coming true or there is a higher power who is causing these signs as a warning. See also Matthew 24:36 to 42. Is that not what is happening - people taking no note and mocking. Yeah, some interesting times ahead to see who is correct!

Just a few of the biggies: Syria, 1138 - Earthquake kills 230,000 people China, 1556 - Earthquake in Shansi, China kills about 830,000 China, 1642 - Flooding takes about 300,000 lives. India, 1737 - Typhoon killed some 300,000 Ireland, 1845 - "Potato Famine" takes at least a million lives. There are many, many more to talk about. You only have to look at the past to realise the present isn't that bad and consider the Syrian's also probably thought it was the end of the world. No the Mayan's cannot predict the end of the world and there is no god who is going to rapture anyone. Natural disasters have happened since the start of Earth billions of years ago. The end times and the end of the world have been predicted for thousands of years. I guess the fact I sit here now to type this means no one has quite got it right yet.

Yes of course, a scheduled temper tantrum by the almighty. Tough love.

So this earthquake will split Africa into two. The sooner the better! Viva South Africa!

How many people actually know that that there is a fault line in East Africa (with regular tremors etc)? Do some research before turning to superstition.

The erupting volcano is in fact Nabro in Eritrea. Feel free to confirm this with the latest MODIS images of the area and quake information from the USGS. The VAAC should probably be getting their info from these recourses, but it seems they’re using the highly accurate twitter /Sarcasm. For those of you who think this is a sign of the end of the universe or are trying to understand the REAL WORLD around you with religious texts, it’s time to get and education.
