Zuma blossoming... as an orchid

2012-09-20 22:22

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma was quite chuffed on Thursday about having an orchid named after him.

The honour was bestowed by the Rustenburg Orchid Society (ROS) to name an orchid after him.

"As you know, I grew up where there are a lot of flowers," Zuma told reporters in Pretoria.

"As a herdboy would walk around collecting flowers; many of them, I did not know their names. Thank you very much for the honour."

The flower was named Phalaenopsis Jacob Zuma.

This came ahead of the 15th SA Orchid Council national conference and show which will be hosted in Rustenburg later this month.

President of the ROS Tinus Oberholzer presented the flower to Zuma at the Union Buildings on Thursday.

"There are very few people in South Africa with orchids named after them."

Former president Nelson Mandela had an orchid named after him but that was done in Singapore, he said.

"We thought that in celebration of the forthcoming orchid show, we would honour the current president [Jacob Zuma] by naming the orchid after him."

Zuma was given options to choose from four differently coloured Phalaenopsis-type orchids.

"He chose the one with the bright yellow colouring. The colour may change depending on the light intensity in a building," said Oberholzer.

"He preferred this [particular orchid] because he said it reminds him of butterflies during his childhood days."

Always knew Orchards were Evil looking. Finally confirmation lol.

      aristar.aristary - 2012-09-21 01:35

Orchards are useful, whereas ORCHIDS very pretty buy absolutely useless, just like Mr Zuma. Interesting that "orciditis" means inflammation of the testes and that the Greek root for both orchids and the Greek name for testes is the same

      MagdaKus - 2012-09-21 06:47

Not really... but.. Well- check out where the name "orchid"comes from. The blokes who coined it thought they looked like something else in the human (or I guess other creatures') anatomy...

Quite appropriate, given that flowers are the reproductive organs of plants...

      MagdaKus - 2012-09-21 06:46

More appropriate than that.Look up the etymology of the word "orchid" and you will agree it could not be more apt. Clue: found near "spear"

Jacob Zuma doesn't deserve anything to be named after him. Don't compare him to Nelson Mandela, it's an insult! What exactly is Zuma doing to pick up this country? nxah!!!

I watched this movie called something like Wild Orchid. The story line was tenuous and the subject was sexual.

  • gungets.tuft - 2012-09-21 07:58

Orchid - Etymology Etymology The name comes from the Greek ????? (├│rkhis), literally meaning "testicle", because of the shape of the root.[4][5] Linnaeus categorized the family as Orchidaceae. Orchid was introduced in 1845 by John Lindley in School Botany, due to an incorrect attempt to extract the Latin stem (orchis) from Orchidaceae. The Greek myth of Orchis explains the origin of the plants. Orchis, the son of a nymph and a satyr, came upon a festival of Dionysios (Bacchus) in the forest. He drank too much, and attempted to rape a priestess of Dionysios. For his insult, he was torn apart by the Bacchanalians. His father prayed for him to be restored, but the gods instead changed him into a flower. These flowers were previously called Orchis, Satyrion (Satyrion feminina), or "ballockwort".

"He drank too much, and attempted to rape"... Appropriate.
