Durban - One person was killed and seven injured in a collision involving four cars on the N3 near Pinetown, paramedics said on Wednesday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the accident took place on the N3 near the St John’s Road off-ramp shortly before 07:00 during the morning rush hour traffic.

He said that reports from the scene indicated that a Durban-bound bakkie veered across the centre-median into an oncoming vehicle.

Two more vehicles then collided with those two vehicles.

Of the injured, one was critical, and another serious. The other five sustained minor injuries.

The person who was killed was the driver of the car and some of the injured were schoolchildren, said Robert Mckenzie from the provincial EMS.

The collision caused major delays to oncoming traffic as motorists attempted to avoid the crash scene while officials cleaned up the area and the injured were taken to hospital.
