SA receives a boost to fight Aids

2010-12-19 22:45

Johannesburg - South Africa has received a major boost to fight Aids, TB and Malaria, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said on Sunday.

"The Global Fund have approved a total of up to $302m funding for South Africa over a period of five years for the tenth round of grants for prevention, treatment and care of Aids and TB," he said.

Motsoaledi said the grant was the highest amount received from the Global Fund, it covers for the first time, treatment, it also includes health systems strengthening and scaling up of medical male circumcisions.

"We welcome the grant, particularly the contribution to Aids treatment. It will allow us to put more people early on treatment and it will improve health outcomes as well as avert Aids-related deaths," Motsoaledi said.

"A total of $196m was for Aids treatments, $33m for medical male circumcision, and a significant amount of $10m for strengthening health systems and community response in respect of HIV/Aids and TB, and $8m for direct support of the TB programmes."

"This is a major addition to our R4.280bn tender for procurement of antiretroviral drugs to support the implementation of HIV and Aids treatment in South Africa for the next two years effective from January 1 2011 to December 31 2012."

The fund would be used to support priority areas such as increase HIV and TB case finding and linkages to care at community level through HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT).

To ensure rapid roll out of safe medical male circumcision targeting in underserved, high burden areas.

Expand access to ART according to updated national guidelines and Isonaizid Prophylaxis Therapy (IPT), strengthen pharmacovigilance and resistance monitoring and reduce adverse events related to ART, TB and related medicines, strengthen health systems supporting HIV/Aids as well as strengthen governments and civil society capacity to manage the response to HIV/Aids.

Uh, I'm sorry but I think your article is misleading, folks. It should state 'South African FATCATS are getting ready to line their pockets with internationally donated resources.' Come on News24, get it right already! Sheesh!

      Sluggo - 2010-12-20 05:26

      Good one, Joe!

      stephanjvv - 2010-12-20 09:06

You've hit the nail right on the head.

      rodneykdc - 2010-12-20 10:08

I'll say , it's new MERCS & bigger houses all round for a select few. There will not be an ounce of difference at ground level , of that you can be sure!!!!

      rodneykdc - 2010-12-20 10:13

Is it not FANTASTIC that we need help from "The Global Fund" with $302 over five years on one hand & on the other we write off a R1 billion debt to Cuba.

      Joe_Public - 2011-01-14 09:24

@rodney We need some way to keep our cash flow up :-)

  • Sluggo - 2010-12-20 05:50

This is the kind of "fairy story" that makes the normal South African SICK to their stomachs! Let's say the Dollar/Rand exchange is R7 to the US$ - how much is that in Rand? Plus, then, the US$4 BILLION!!! So this is all so cute but could we, as the SA public, please be given explicit details as to whose bank account this money will go into? This country has been given funds after funds after funds and STILL, we are unable to visit a state hospital which is clean and orderly; still, more and more people are DYING and being infected with HIV; even worse, STILL more people are bed-hopping like it's going out of fashion. Four point six million take HIV test in SA - so? How many infected? That's what we'd like to know. This probably sounds quite uncaring but seriously, when one pays exorbitant monthly medical aid premiums so that they can visit a CLEAN hospital and THEN the medical aid needs a flippin' "authorization number" for some simple medical procedures - THIS makes you think - doesn't it? Take a look at THEN come back and report this supposed fantastic news. As for Hilary Clinton, who the h..l is SHE trying to impress? Sorry peeps - there will NEVER EVER be enough money, food, jobs or housing in this country until such time as we have decent, dedicated, faithful and trustworthy politicians in power. Thing is, WHERE oh where would one find or vote for such politicians? Dunno! They're all talk, talk, talk, talk.

  • dictator - 2010-12-20 08:09

Yip the world just don't get it do they???Zuma is already tasting his new house on the hills. But let them ass funk their own people. We have our own people to worry about..

  • Graham - 2010-12-20 09:25

And now SA can write off even more of Cuba's debt! These funds will NEVER reach the people they were intended for.

  • jean - 2010-12-20 09:37

What a disgrace and waste of money: "$33m for medical male circumcision" For that price you may as well cut the lot off and South Africa will be a better place. We ( and Africa) are a lot of useless beggers and are wasting the worlds money. Everyone is quick to denounce USA & West but are quick to hold out the beggers hand. What a bunch of 2 faces so & so's

  • Faerie - 2010-12-20 09:59

I completely agree with Joe, Sluggo & all the others. Very well said everyone !!!!

  • Joy - 2010-12-20 10:35

It is my belief that disease/HIV/AIDs is nature's way to reduce / cull the human population. Medical Intervention is mankind's way to make our lifespans longer, as well as a money making business. All these international counties who DONATE vast amounts of money towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS, etc - don't actually realize that they are perpetuating the problem of over-population in sub-Saharan Africa. Just allow nature to take its course, and stop interfering ! The money that SA will be receiving is probably going to line the pockets of our ever-so-greedy politicians.

      madwalenihospital - 2010-12-21 16:00

That's nice Joy. So when you get breast cancer or your child gets leukaemia shall we just 'let nature take its cours'.

      Kenko - 2010-12-22 11:29

No madwalenihospital, I think she means that DONATIONS are the wrong thing and perpetuates the population problem. AIDS is mostly self inflicted and is spread by behaviour whereas cancer is not. If you keep AIDS sufferers living longer, the more they will spread the disease.

  • johancampbell - 2010-12-20 12:41

What we really need is aid to change the moral behaviour of our irresponsible citizens. We must stop fighting aids. AIDS is not the enemy AIDS is the result. The result of irresponsible uncaring selfish sexual behaviour. Read this powerful article then share it with everyone you know.

      Joy - 2010-12-20 13:15

At last, someone whom I agree with 100% !!

      Rare-dical8 - 2010-12-20 14:02

But not all the cases of infections result from selfish sexual behaviour, but regardless, the fight for AIDS should continue, it could be you needing the very cure one day! @ Joy, are you human?

  • Intactive - 2010-12-21 00:33

After three trials, circumcising a total of 5,400 men might have resulted in 73 fewer of the circumcised men (64 men) getting HIV in less than two years than the non-circumcised control groups (137 men). That is the whole basis of the claim about "60% reduction". Yet many other studies show no difference (or greater risk to circumcised men or their partners) in the real world. If mass circumcision reduces, increases, or makes no difference to HIV, who will know? It's being "rolled out" and now "aggressively scaled up" with no measure of the outcome. It's $33 million down the drain, and $33 million NOT spent on strengthening health systems, or on condoms, which are known to work.

  • jannie.swem16 - 2010-12-21 15:16

+1 this money isnt for aids its for Beemers, MLs and Hummers... we have enough money in this country to fight aids.... only problem is our guvament... think as public servants they are entitled to Billionaire type lifestyles yet they preach socialsim.... its ok for everyone to be poor execpt those in power... why? so they can stay in power... the autocratic african way masked as a "democracy"... pluuueeease!!!! i'm a 23year old South African currently studying eastern and western medicine in China(M.B.B.S.) and 3 years ago i embarked on a deep research journey outside of the normal pharmacological deceptive agenda behind the cure of the HI virus. In those three years i attained and discovered the most secretively kept and oppressed data and research stats that had been trialed and proven successful especially in Finland from the mid eighties till today, the more deeper i got into my search for the real truth behind this pandemic the more it became clear to me why South Africa and especially KwaZulu Natal has one of the highest infection rate in the whole world compared to Senegal which has the least infection rate in the whole of Africa(Unicef stats 09)while they dont have as much GDP as RSA has nor do they spend millions for the prevention campaings against this disease.Clearly Senegal and many other countries had something that South Africa doesnt and this 'thing' is what the HI virus consumes in ones immune system in order for it to proliferate, invade and suppress the immune system causing one of the most severe pathophysical complications known to man in this day and age.I discovered that this 'thing is a compound called Selenium(glutathione peroxidase,GPx4),a substance that plays a major role in the metabolism and response of T-lymphoctes and the synthesis and proliferation(multiplication)of T-cell protein(CD4 cells),which means that this compound influences the T-Lymphocites eradication of tumor cells.Clinical trials that go back to early August 1987,the positive health center,Harley street London and the scharuzer and saucher experiments reported that an increase in the daily consumption of Selenium increases the appetites, gastrointestinal function as well as neurological and psychological function benefits of men who are seroHIV positive.Clearly the deficiency of Selenium is assosciated with an increase in viral replication while Selenium supplementation inhibits the virus instead of feeding it. The fact is South Africa's soil is deficient of Selenium(ref.World Selenium Atlas prof.Oldfield p.50) (mainly KwaZulu Natal, half of Gauteng) which means that the majority of the population is born and lives with extremely low serum Selenium concetrations thus making people more easily prone to HIV infection compared to people in countries like Senegal,Finland,New Zealand ect.I created and patented a programme/project for the supplementation/fertilization of South Africas soil with this profound compound which would've required the implementation of a law that requires all farms producing fruits, vegitation and poultry for the main market to supplement the soils and animals with the necessary amounts of Selenium to improve and eradicate the current HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. i never wanted this to be a political game but a very importatant and pivotal moment in South Africas fight against Aids and Cancer. I'd like to state that HIV/Aids is a three dimensional disease(geographical, medical and psychological) just like all reality is three dimensional and so it can never be eradicated and reduced with only a 1 dimensional aproach(medical) which is our Governments biggest mistake to date,so until we correct this mistake South Africa has no future because the record infection rate will continue to escalate thus crippling the economy far sooner than anyone can expect.

      lusiboy - 2010-12-21 21:22

and yes i've sent this all over the biggest news media and emailed it to the govermnent too but i guess only fools are worried and dedicate their lives to discover cutting edge scientific theories that can change doom to bloom or maybe the most effective weapon against aids is not supposed to be discovered by a young black man like must always be the super pharmaceutical industry who created the virus in the first place.

      Kenko - 2010-12-22 11:39

Your illusions of grandeur do you no favours. I fould your piece quite interresting but then you came with the pitiful "young black man who are being overlokked" angle, and to top it off you accuse the pharmaceutical industry of creating the problem. What did they have to do with the distribution of selenium on earth?

      lusiboy - 2010-12-22 12:18

@kENKO lol they never did anything to the soils selenium levels that i can teach you about another day, have you ever heard of Bayer?well they are the big dogs in the pharma industry and this is what : Thousands of hemophiliacs filed a class-action lawsuit Monday against Bayer Corp. and several other companies, claiming they knowingly sold blood contaminated with HIV and hepatitis C. The lawsuit, filed in federal court, alleges the companies conspired to sell blood-clotting products that were manufactured using blood from sick, high-risk donors. It also alleges the companies continued distributing them abroad in 1984 and 1985, after they stopped selling them in the United States because of the known risk of HIV and hepatitis transmission. Monday's suit was filed on behalf foreigners who received the drug, said attorney Robert Nelson. "This is a worldwide tragedy," Nelson said. "Thousands of hemophiliacs have unnecessarily died from AIDS and many thousands more are infected with HIV or hepatitis C." Bayer Corp. and Baxter Healthcare Corp., also named in the lawsuit, did not immediately return calls seeking comment after business hours Monday. The medicine, called Factor VIII concentrate, can stop or prevent potentially fatal bleeding in people with hemophilia. Early in the AIDS epidemic, the medicine was commonly made using mingled plasma from 10,000 or more donors. Because at the time there was not yet a screening test for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, thousands of hemophiliacs were infected. But the lawsuit alleges there were precautions Bayer and the others could have taken such as screening donors or using volunteers, a proven less-risky method, but refused. As of 1992, the contaminated blood products had infected at least 5,000 hemophiliacs in Europe with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. More than 2,000 had already developed AIDS and 1,250 had died from the disease, the lawsuit said. By the mid-1990s in Japan, hemophiliacs accounted for the majority of the country's 4,000 reported cases of HIV infection and virtually all infections of Japan's hemophiliacs have been linked to contaminated blood products imported from the United States, according to the lawsuit. In Latin America, at least 700 HIV cases are linked to use of contaminated blood products by hemophiliacs, the lawsuit said. The lawsuit was filed less than two weeks after Bayer responded to an investigation by The New York Times accusing the company of selling old stock of the medicine abroad, while marketing a newer, safer product in the United States. While the company said it acted responsibly and in line with the best medical knowledge at the time, Bayer and three other companies that made the concentrate settled 15 years of U.S. lawsuits from people who took the drug, paying about $600 million, the newspaper said.

      lusiboy - 2010-12-22 12:26

@Kenko dont be so quick to debunk or judge a fellow humanbeing who is doing all that he can to save millions of lives who are in the jaws of an enemy that they cant see because of the state of poverty and endless orchastrated distortion that africa is always under.Listen and show compassion and i promise you GOD will do the same for you because he is the only reason why i'm doing this and all that i know i know because i believe in him ans am willing to die for the truth and this truth can save millions of lives.

      lusiboy - 2010-12-22 12:35

lawsuit was filed in 2003 and funnily enough as always the media just never put this in the front pages,i'm sure there were more important issues like the bokke winning the weekend match,or celebrities with implants or whatever distraction they always blast the daily man and woman with...
