Zuma to launch strategic HIV/Aids plan

2011-12-01 07:27

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma will launch the new national strategic plan to fight HIV at a national World Aids Day event in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

Zuma, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who chairs the SA National Aids Council (Sanac), and Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet will mark the 23rd commemoration of World Aids Day at the Wolfson stadium.

Cabinet ministers and members of Sanac will also attend.

On Tuesday, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi released the national antenatal sentinel HIV and syphilis prevalence survey eight months later than expected.

He said HIV-prevalence among pregnant women in the country had increased from 29.4% to 30.2%.

There was a high degree of stabilisation in the percentage increase of pregnant women between ages 16 to 24 who were infected. However there had been an upward spike between the ages of 24 and 39.

Motsoaledi said prevention methods addressed at the youth as reasons why the numbers had stayed within the "confidence interval".

He attributed the high HIV prevalence in the older category to a lack of antiretrovirals (ARVs) and counselling.

According to the survey, KwaZulu-Natal still had the highest prevalence of HIV-infected pregnant women, while the Northern and Western Cape were the lowest.

Motsoaledi said the government would continue to increase its ARV rollout and HIV/Aids prevention strategies.

  • Larry - 2011-12-01 07:33

What An Ambassador for Aids! His best advice would probably to take a shower after sex. This guy should stay in the background and hang his head in shame.

      JuditVictor - 2011-12-01 09:44

A Plan? There is no plan. Surely since 1981 the only plan was abstinence. Mr Zuma, you NEVER tell the populace to curb having babies. You NEVER tell them that poor children become poor adults since poverty cannot get you a strong, lucrative education. You NEVER tell teenagers publicly not to have sex. What exactly is it that will motivate them. Kids have no incling about really dying, hence the folly of youth to drive fast, get drunk, let's party, etc. Tell people to have one wife, to stay with her only, not to stray, and certainly not to have a baby if you have no prospects whatsoever of giving him/her an education. Can you not see it? But no, I reckon to politicians, human numbers mean crosses next to names on election days. you cannot teach kids any morals with a book in the right hand and a condom in the left hand. So AIDS is here to stay, because adults really don't mean what they say plus they themselves are fornicating. The poverty sticken kids are without a rudder utterly.

      Pieter - 2011-12-01 12:51

Larry if u speak the truth here, your comment gets erased....truth hurts, whenever I comment on our angel of a president it disappears in thin air....pathetic

  • Lynn - 2011-12-01 07:38

Would be very interesting to know how many woman are pregnant and infected with HIV as a result of rape. Fist thing to do is get rapists out of society.

AGAIN ?? Every year,01-12, the spiders come out to get pics taken !!!

  • Ntombiziyabusa - 2011-12-01 08:12

For the past 30 years, every year on the 1st of December, we get a deluge of numbers. NO SOLUTION. Why can people not open their heads to the possibility that they have an incorrect view to the problem?

      Robin Dyers - 2011-12-01 08:31

Please share your view and solution.

      Ntombiziyabusa - 2011-12-01 08:55

I have neither a view nor a solution. It seem more and more obvious to me that the prevailing view is incorrect.

  • Robin Dyers - 2011-12-01 08:13

    Within the "confidence interval"?

  • Piet - 2011-12-01 08:16

    Building SHOWERS ??????

  • Markrschulz - 2011-12-01 08:17

In keeping with the emerging Stalinist trend in government, the Beloved and Eternal Father of the Democratic People's Republic of South Africa performed an on site inspection of fifty recently installed showers. There was a spontaneous outpouring of love shown by the community, who organised a surprise rally in support of Beneficent Zuma and the Savior Party. "The showers will be put to great use in advancing the Revolution", said Zuma to fainting women and frolicking children. Zuma also took the time to warn the community to be constantly vigilant in case imperialists and agent provocateurs should try to mislead them with stories of condoms and anti-retrovirals.

      Silvana - 2011-12-01 12:04

Hilarious! But not unrealistic. He will implement that just before elections.

  • joey.kruger - 2011-12-01 08:17

Does it involve showering after sex?

  • RemoteMedic - 2011-12-01 08:18

What? Rolling out community showers which isn't enclosed?

  • Itumeleng - 2011-12-01 08:20

    Shower to Shower!!!

  • Theodon - 2011-12-01 08:26

unless it starts with the words ABSTINENCE then it won't work. or, you could continue to hand out condoms and treat people like animals who cannot control themselves...cause that has really worked EVERYWHERE. Alternatively, buy them a shower...

      Jerhone - 2011-12-01 09:39

what do you mean ABSTINENCE this is a colonial word, our great bobjaan the min of education is allowing sex education in junior schools, and we hope it will be adopted in nursery schools in the future, here we don't teach them not to do the deed, but what to do with the tools provided by mother nature, more children less farms this is our main objective, it is ground breaking future teckenolodegee

  • Cameronl - 2011-12-01 08:40

ja ja ja zuma whatever, remember when you took a shower to avoid aids? forgotten have you? well we the public have not and will never forget that perfect example of idiocy on your part! and now you are launching this? come on man get real, We have had aids in this country for a LOOOONG time, why suddenly the urge to focus on it now??? Education is the key to helping people to avoid it, and NO this does not mean stapeling condoms to pamphlets!!! my god that was a stupid idea. Education starts in the schools right? start educating the poor, there are actually people in this country that STILL dont even know what the bloody hell aids even is. Have a little re-look at the education system mr president, maybe we will slowly start to get somewhere!

  • Julie - 2011-12-01 08:46

Then I suggest he leads by example of not sleeping around with every female that comes his way and NOT take showers to prevent AIDS. Only then, perhaps, will any AIDS plan be workable - not before the prez himself sets the example... No wonder Zapiro always draws him with a shower attached to his head...

  • Julie - 2011-12-01 08:49

The ABC of an anti-AIDS campaign/// ABSTAIN, BE FAITHFUL, CONDOMISE!!!

      Cameronl - 2011-12-01 08:54

Nicely put Julie, a simple and effective slogan

  • MarkH - 2011-12-01 08:58

Whether it be nature's way of saving the planet from over population or a colonial, imperialistic plot, just please, please don't also blame it on apartheid.

      Johncarlos ? Biza - 2011-12-01 10:36

There was an Apartheid doctor who infected innocent people

      Silvana - 2011-12-01 12:09

@MarkH, Nature will never win this battle. They are breeding like flies to get their social grants so they can go have their hair braided. They don't give a stuff about the babies.

      Silvana - 2011-12-01 12:14

@Johncarlos. Oh BULL SH*T!!!!!!!!!! That is an urban legend that came from a novel written about the bush war in ZIM. Learn to separate FACT from FICTION buddy. I suppose you also believe that aliens are taking over the planet, because you read on new24.

      Silvana - 2011-12-01 12:20

@Johncarlos. And another thing. There is no such thing as an "apartheid doctor". A doctor is a doctor. If you mean there was a doctor during the apartheid era that infected innocent people, then who is he? Why has he not been named? Why wasn't he brought to trial for crimes against humanity? Don't make empty statements that you can't back up! Idiot!!

  • Tshivhombela Fhatuwani - 2011-12-01 09:29

I hope it's not about shower and protex.

      Cameronl - 2011-12-01 09:37

Protex so is that the secret ingredient huh? im gona shoot out and get me a bar of protex, that way when I go out and whore the night away, I can rest easy knowing my safety lies in a bar of soap and a good scrub in da showaa.... hahahaha what a joke

  • MastersVoice - 2011-12-01 09:33

Our Beloved President has a special interest in this plan, seeing as he falls under the high-risk category himself.

  • Humbulani - 2011-12-01 09:34

whAT AN ambassador for aids, his best expertise will be that after sex just go to shower to minimise hiv and aids,as long as you are circumsize,

  • Aubrey - 2011-12-01 09:36

  • Martin - 2011-12-01 09:40

passing HIV on to another person is murder.Charge these people with murder. That will bring Hiv DOWN!!!

  • Tshivhombela Fhatuwani - 2011-12-01 09:41

Someone else should've launched the campaign instead of a man with a log in his eyes. His polygamous lifestyle is an antithesis to the war against HIV-Aids. How can he tell people to abstain or use a condom when he can't do either of the above. He used shower and protex as a protective measure and he continues to impregnate women out of his polygamous marriages. Isn't a matter of don't look at the deeds of the pastor rather just take the word he preaches?

      MastersVoice - 2011-12-01 09:44

      Well said

  • Marius - 2011-12-01 09:48

Ok, so my previous comment was removed, lets try again, "Free Willy showers", only to the non-Taxpayers.

  • Ryan - 2011-12-01 10:02

    The plan: build more showers.

  • Maai - 2011-12-01 11:34

  • Silvana - 2011-12-01 11:58

Here's a plan for you Zuma. Tell them to keep their pants zipped. Oops, no, they're just following your example.

  • Jerhone - 2011-12-01 12:04
