Christ important for Christmas

2006-12-18 20:07
London - Some 80% of Britons believe that celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ is still an important part of Christmas, a survey found on Monday.

Conducted for religious think-tank Theos, the poll also found that 89% believe that the festival is too commercialised.

Every year Britain's media carries a flurry of stories about how Christmas is allegedly being undermined by "politically correct" officials.

One school in Rotherham, northern England, reportedly took the traditional turkey off the menu in favour of halal chicken.

And British home secretary John Reid, who has hit out at festive "political correctness", sent out a Christmas card which makes no direct mention of the festival.

The survey found that 62% of people said the festival made them think about spiritual matters and 77% added it prompted them to think about what is "important" to them.

Of those questioned, 86% said spending time with family and friends was the best thing about Christmas, while 43% said financial pressures were the worst.

Pollsters CommunicateResearch conducted telephone interviews with 1 000 adults between December 8 and 10.
