Security boost for KZN

2006-12-13 14:19

Durban - Security agencies in KwaZulu-Natal will deploy an additional 1 260 people during the festive season, KwaZulu-Natal's MEC for safety and security, Bheki Cele, said on Wednesday.

Addressing the press at the regional South African Police Services headquarters in Durban, Cele said the extra 1 260 people would include personnel from the police, the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate as well the eThekwini Metro police force.

This would put a total of 12 277 personnel on the ground during the festive season.

Cele said the deployment had not been as a result of the negative publicity Durban received from the recent rape of a French swimming official last week, but had been planned all along.

Cele criticised the media for highlighting the rape of the French official.

He said the media had not highlighted the swift response by police to arrest suspects in the case.

He said police had been instructed during the season to take a tough stance on alcohol-related incidents.

Cele also urged people who were members of stokvels not to draw large sums of money, but to make arrangement with banks to transfer money.
