Silva doing well, back in US

2010-11-01 16:36
Cape Town - South African-based photojournalist João Silva is still being operated on but is doing well, his best friend Greg Marinovich said on Monday.

Silva lost the lower half of both legs when he stepped on a landmine in Afghanistan while on assignment for the New York Times.

Marinovich said Silva is being operated on every second day but is in a good state of mind. Marinovich and Silva are the only surviving members of the Bang Bang Club of photographers.

"He is quite chipper," Marinovich told News24. "When he comes out of sedation the first thing he asks for is a beer!"

Silva is currently at Walter Reed Army Medical Centre in Washington after being transferred from a hospital in Germany.

His wife Vivian is with him.
Marinovich said that he will also be going there on November 11 to visit Silva.
