To mark the anniversary of the release of former president Nelson Mandela from prison 20 years ago, his foundation has released a chronology of his life.

Washington - US President Barack Obama on Friday called former president Nelson Mandela to mark the 20th anniversary of his release from prison, which helped usher in the end of white minority rule.

"President Obama expressed the American people's great admiration for president Mandela, who was very appreciative of the call," White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs said.

Mandela, 91, who is now retired from public life, was feted in South Africa on Thursday, along with his legacy of a non-racial, unified post-apartheid nation, 20 years after he emerged from jail after 27 years of incarceration.
