Mandela: SA needs good leaders

Now as much as ever, South Africa needs disciplined leaders, Nelson Mandela has said at birthday celebration in Pretoria.

In 1994 Evita Bezuidenhout hosted a television chat show called Funigalore.

She interviewed the former political prisoners, now the new government.

She was given thirty minutes with President Mandela. The President of France was waiting in one adjoining room; the Head of the Olympics in the other.

Nelson Mandela treated her like a lady. Before we started I thanked him through my eyeashes for giving Evita this privilege.

"No, Pieter, I want to be on Evita's show, because I have important things to say and no one watches the news."

And in the show he gave a forceful message of support to the emerging united police force of the new South Africa. When it was over, Nelson Mandela walked Evita Bezuidenhout to the door.

"President Mandela, you've never seen me without Evita's hair?"

"No, I haven't."

"Do you want to?"

"Yes, I do."

I took off Evita's wig. He gasped.

"No, Pieter, put it back on!"
