Mandela: SA needs good leaders

Now as much as ever, South Africa needs disciplined leaders, Nelson Mandela has said at birthday celebration in Pretoria.

Port Elizabeth - The Eastern Cape agricultural department will hand over 150 goats to poor communities on Friday in celebration of Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday.

"Madiba is a champion of poverty eradication and the department prides itself by spearheading the fight against underdevelopment, starvation and hunger by supporting our communities and economy through sustained agriculture programmes," MEC Gugile Nkwinti said in a statement.

He said the goats would be handed over to communities in Adelaide, Bedfort and Mount Pleasant.

This is part of the department's "livestock improvement programme" to help impoverished farmers.

"Many people are unemployed while most depend on the surrounding areas for employment, meaning they are knowledgeable about the basics of farming but have no resources," Nwinti said.

Mandela will be celebrating his 90th birthday at a private party in his home town Qunu in the Eastern Cape at the weekend.

Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, the African National Congress has unfurled two seven-storey high banners of Mandela on the side of its headquarters, Luthuli House.

"The massive banners are a fitting tribute to a giant of Africa, a global icon, and a much-loved son of our soil," the ANC said in a statement.
