Thabo Mbeki

In the news: Ends the year as a lame-duck president.

President Thabo Mbeki had arguably his toughest year as a politician since 1994. Mbeki's decision to run for a third term as ANC president perplexed many observers and ultimately led to his rejection by the ANC rank and file in December when Jacob Zuma was elected as new party leader.

Other executive decisions through the year proved contentious. These include the axing of Deputy Health Minister Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, the suspension of Director of Public Prosecutions Vusi Pikoli and the retention of Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.
