In the news: Increasing interest rates

Economic growth is slowing, probably more sharply than the government had predicted.

The main reason for the slowdown is that interest rates have been lifted by four percentage points since June 2006. Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni used interest rate hikes to rope in soaring inflation.

One of the biggest questions for South Africa's economy in 2008 is when will inflation stop climbing, allowing interest rates to fall? Mboweni will be the man to watch, as he was in 2007.
