It’s been five years in the making and it’s finally here. The brains behind the Soweto Beer Buffet Festival, Vonani Mashila admits it’s not been an easy journey. He says the idea came about when he came across local brewers who were struggling to enter the market.

“I realised that our own brands struggle because the funds to market, influence the market and also win part of it is difficult. There is also no platform for new alcohol beverages to exhibit themselves. I then decided to put together a beer buffet knowing that a person will not go to a club and buy a new beer. However at the buffet, they can try any brand they see and that brand can  gain a market,” he explains. He adds that even festivals are also not willing to give them space.

The man went as far as selling his car to make this possible. “For 5yrs I struggled to raise funds, so late last year I met someone who agreed to meet me half way, I then sold my car to put the event together,” he says. Nonetheless, he is overjoyed that it’s finally happening and share what people can expect.

Cupcake and Siphokazi January will be there as MCs. There will be 25 acts to keep the festival goers entertained and among them will be Metro FM’s Mo Flava. “People can expect an event that is different in all facets, where entertainment is world class, where no bar will ask them for money. An event where the only time they search their pocket for money would be to buy food from our delicious Kasi food stalls,” he says. The event will take place at Shap Stadium in Soweto on 30 March.

No tickets will be sold at the gate, tickets are only available at Computicket, shoprite and checkers stores at R350 general access and R650 for VIP.
