Say it ain’t so!

Grumpy Cat – the world-famous pet who spawned countless memes and a best-selling series of books thanks to her unhappy expression – has sadly passed away.

The puss – whose human is Tabatha Bundesen from Morristown, Arizona, in the US – was just seven years old when she succumbed to complications following a urinary tract infection.

Grumpy Cat (real name Tardar Sauce) shot to fame in 2012 in a YouTube video that got 15,7 million views. Within two days of the video going viral, Tabatha was able to quit her job as a waitress as her phone “never stopped ringing”.

Since then, she’s amassed a reported $100 million (R1,4 billion) fortune – and Grumpy Cat has earned a spot in Hollywood where she was often photographed with stars. In 2014 she made her big-screen debut in Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever.

Grumpy Cat even became an “author” with the publication of Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book – a tongue-in-cheek guide to attaining “true grumpiness” from the self-appointed “master of bad attitude”.

Her disgruntled expression wasn’t a result of feeling sad, though – she was born with dwarfism, making her forehead look bigger, and a severe underbite.

On Friday, Grumpy Cat’s passing was announced on Instagram: “We are unimaginably heartbroken to announce the loss of our beloved Grumpy Cat.

“Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome.

“She passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, May 14, at home in the arms of her mommy, Tabatha.

“Besides being our baby and a cherished member of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough. Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere.”

Heartbroken fans immediately took to social media to pay tribute to her.

RIP Grumpy Cat – the world will miss you.
