A young boy has died after choking on a hot dog at a family get-together at a funfair on Gran Canaria, Canary Islands.

The eight-year-old, who’s believed to be Spanish, attended the funfair in the town of Telde on Sunday 23 June, when the incident occurred, the Mirror reports.

The youngster, whose name hasn’t been released, was reportedly at the event with his parents when he suddenly choked on the food item at a beach bar.

Panic-stricken family members and staff reportedly tried resuscitating the little boy until paramedics arrived on the scene, Daily Mail reports.

Unfortunately, medics weren’t able to revive him – despite trying for an hour.

Both the boy’s parents were admitted to hospital for shock and have been offered psychological help, The Sun reports.

Witnesses told local media the boy started choking after his first bite of the hot dog.

The island’s local council suspended the event and called for two days of mourning.

Telde’s mayor, Héctor Suárez, sent his deepest sympathy to the family.

“We are dismayed and very affected,” Suárez said.

An investigation into the child’s death is underway.
