Four survive tragedy at sea after 32 days adrift in South Pacific

Four people survived a month adrift in the South Pacific after a tragic voyage.

A group of 12 people left Bougainville Island, east of mainland Papua New Guinea in a canoe before Christmas. Four people were rescued nearly 2 000km from their starting point, according to The Guardian.

The passengers were reportedly on their way to Carteret Islands, 100km away for Christmas celebrations but never made it to their destination as the canoe they were travelling in, which was powered by an outboard motor, capsized en route.

The voyage resulted in the tragic death of eight of their fellow travellers, one of which was a baby. The rest were able to right the boat and bail water out of it. The deceased reportedly either drowned when the canoe capsized or died from dehydration while adrift at sea.

“It’s still very difficult to talk about and recall what we went through on that ill-fated trip,” Dominic Stally, one of the survivors, says.

“We all left so happy and excited to be traveling to Carteret Island for the holidays and never thought we would end up where we are today.”

Dominic says a number of fish vessels and boats passed nearby without noticing them, until they were finally spotted and rescued off New Caledonia, reports the Solomon Star.

The survivors are known to be two men, including Stally, a woman and a 12-year-old girl.
