Following the fatal fall of his granddaughter, Chloe, who plunged 46m to her death after slipping out of his arms, the devastated grandfather was arrested and charged with negligent homicide, Daily Mail reported.

Salvatore Anello “accidentally” dropped his 18-month-old granddaughter Chloe, from the 11th floor of the Freedom of the Seas cruise ship onto a concrete dock in July.

The granddad who was held on $80 000 (around R1,2 million) bail after being charged following Chloe’s death, has since made his first court appearance in Puerto Rico, People reported.

“They can’t do anything worse to me than what has already happened,” the distraught grandfather reportedly told NBC News journalist Kerry Sanders off camera.

According to People prosecutors argued that Salvatore “negligently exposed the child to the abyss through a window on the 11th floor,” despite his family maintaining that the incident was a horrific accident and not a crime.

He could face years in prison if he’s found guilty.
