Dogs really are man’s best friend!

Thanks to her three-year-old Cockapoo, Pickle, Kirsten Callander (35) managed to escape a fire in her flat in York, England.

When the flat’s smoke alarm went off, Pickle nudged Kirsten awake and alerted her and her fiancé, Matt (36), to a blaze that had started in a neighbour’s home.

The brave canine pushed Kirsten through the home and to the smoke alarm so she could feel its vibrations. She suffers from a condition called Ménière’s disease that caused her hearing loss.

“Pickle was very persistent,” Kirsten said. “She kept on tapping me with her head and licking me.

“I opened my eyes and saw it was pitch black and then I saw her.

“I asked her, ‘What is it?’ She jumped off the bed and showed me the sign for danger, which is her lying on the floor.

“It was then that I could start to smell smoke. I opened the bedroom door and expected to be met with a fireball.

“As I walked out into the living room I couldn’t see anything wrong so I thought maybe it was nothing

“She kept following me though and nudging me and kept on dropping to the floor.

“I thought something still wasn’t right but I couldn’t see any flames in the house.

“I was panicking, thinking, ‘What the heck!’ I opened the kitchen door and couldn’t see anything.

“That’s when I felt the vibrations from the smoke alarm.

“Pickle was still showing me the sign for danger and then I looked through the peephole in the front door.

“I could see flames and smoke billowing out.

“I ran back to Matt and told him Pickle had shown me there was a fire and that we needed to get out as quickly as we could.”

Without Pickle, Kirsten is convinced that she and Matt would have perished in the flames and smoke.

“If Pickle hadn’t have woken me up we wouldn’t be here, simple as that,” Kirsten said.

“She saved my life, no shadow of a doubt.

“She’s my very best friend, my soul mate and my guardian angel. She’s always there for me when I need here.”

Kirsten has had the pooch for two years. She and Matt are tying the knot soon.

“Our wedding day is still happening because of Pickle.

“She saved us and I’m just so grateful,” Kirsten said.

David Robson from Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, the charity that trained Pickle, said, “Incidents like this highlight just how vital our dogs are for people who can’t hear fire alarms or other important sounds.”
