In a bizarre new trend Instagrammers are racking up thousands of followers by creating intricate soap-opera storylines with Barbie dolls.

Forget picturesque posts snapped in exotic destinations or stylish models showing off their latest outfits, Instagram’s bizarre new fad has followers logging on every day for a dose of miniature melodrama, Daily Mail reports.

With nearly 50 000 followers, Henna Kiili (25) from Finland, runs one of the most popular of these accounts portraying dramas with dolls and their miniature accessories.

For the past two years Kiili has unfurled the story of the roller-coaster love-life of her tragic heroine, Ellie.

Kiili uses just her phone's camera and editing apps to create the detailed snaps that capture Ellie's story, before adding descriptions and dialogue in the captions.

But Ellie's isn't the smoothed-over plastic life of an average Instagram influencer. Instead, her appeal lies in her more human qualities and the drama-filled ups and downs of her life.

This was on full display in a stunning plot twist for Ellie on Christmas Eve, when her husband, Damon, was murdered by her crazed ex-boyfriend, Miko.

Explaining the decision to Insider, Kiili said, "Sometimes life happens. Christmas isn't always happy. I just wanted to remind people of that. Many people thanked me for that and told their stories to me."

In fact, Kiili’s decision to kill off one of the main characters in the soapie has been a huge turning point.

Just days later her account was shared on Twitter, in a viral tweet regarding her newest plot twist.

The tweet read: “There’s a whole community on Instagram of adults who create elaborate storylines for their Barbie dolls and I’ve been following one for years, and on Christmas Eve the Ken doll got murdered.”

Far from finding it odd, several other Twitter users admitted they were eager to dive into the Instagram doll community's soap operas.

Other accounts dedicated to creating dramas with dolls for Instagram audiences include @Lulu_thebarbie, which tells the story of a bisexual character who’s dating a girl named Maya, and has also adopted a child.

Meanwhile, @Bybarnsdolls, a photographer from Russia, takes fashion snaps and portraits of dolls as if they were models.

Another account, @La_doll_cevita, run by a German Instagrammer is built around a Barbie named Ela with snaps of the doll enjoying herself with friends.
