Limpopo bus crash driver caught trying to leave the country

A bus driver involved in a bus crash in Limpopo last Friday has been arrested after attempting to skip the country.

The crash occurred on the N1 towards Gauteng. 

It’s alleged the driver lost control and the bus overturned – leaving 52 people injured, including himself, and nine people dead. The cause of the crash is still unknown.

Speaking to DRUM, police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said, “The cause of the accident is still unknown, but it is still being investigated.

“The man has been charged with nine counts of culpable homicide and another charge of reckless driving.” 

According to police reports, the driver disappeared after being discharged from hospital. He was then found hidden inside a goods trailer‚ trying to illegally cross the border to Zimbabwe.

The driver is now in custody. He appeared in court on Tuesday and was been denied bail. 

“The man has been denied bail and his cases were postponed to 2 October 2018 for further police investigations‚” Colonel Ngoepe said.
