The government has enforced some restrictions following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration that Covid-19 is a national disaster.These restrictions include limiting public gatherings to 100 or less and persecuting people who spread fake news about the virus.With regards to gatherings, police minister Bheki Cele announced that premises selling alcohol must shut down, or can operate between 9am and 6pm Mondays to Saturdays and until 1pm on Sundays and public holidays, provided there are no more than 50 people.These places are restaurants, shebeens, bars and taverns.Read more: Coronavirus: SA warned that those failing to comply with new regulations will be dealt with harshlyThis doesn’t sit well with one tavern manager in Stilfontein, North West. Lungiswa Nkonyane says this is unfair and she doesn’t understand what alcohol has to do with coronavirus.She points out that the times given by the government for taverns to operate don’t bring in any money because there are no people drinking during those periods.She says this will hit her and others’ pockets hard, and yet the municipality will want their full rates and services money at the end of the month.“This is a problem and we don’t know what to do but rather abide by the law because we have no other choice. I don’t know what alcohol has to do with this coronavirus,” she tells Move!.She says she will follow the law, but has no clue how she will make up for the lost income because at the time she has to close, most of her customers are returning from work.Read more: NO-BOOZE RULE NOT NEGOTIABLE!“This will badly affect my income. It makes no sense that we must close at 6pm during the week. We hardly make any money while closing at 10pm. So now it will be worse. People come to our taverns after 6pm,” she explains.She says even the delivery people have told her that they won’t be delivering to her on weekends.“Who are we going to sell that alcohol to if we order more because we close at 1pm anyway?” she asks.
