When he was born in 1941, Robin Smith was only expected to live to age 12. But he’s defied all odds and recently celebrated his 78th birthday.

He now holds the record for the longest living person with Down’s syndrome in the United Kingdom.

“I’m very happy that it’s my birthday today,” Robin said while celebrating his special day with his favourite game bingo and some cake.

Robin, who lives at Northleigh residential home in Kettering, Northamptonshire, is described as an “amazing” man.

“Robin is a bit of a character and he’s still very mobile and active,” home manager Michaela Kennerly said.

"He attends the day centre and likes washing up, hoovering and laying the tables.”

According to the Northern Hampshire Telegraph, Robin now holds the record after the previous record holder, Kenny Cridge, died at the age of 79 in April.

He may be nearing 80 but there’s no stopping Robin. He enjoys yoga, dancing, aerobics and karaoke, The Metro adds.

“He’s a happy-go-lucky sort of chap,” Robin’s cousin Janet Whitton (75) says. “He’s had a great life. He likes horse racing. He loves the thrill and spectacle of it.”

Robin puts it down to keeping fit.

“It’s important to have an active lifestyle and keep as busy as possible,” he says. “I like to do a bit of dancing whenever I can.”

And – given his latest milestone – we’re pretty sure Robin has lots to dance about!
