Three Shoprite workers from KwaMashu in Kwazulu-Natal appeared at the magistrate’s court in Ntuzuma on Monday after they scammed customers of their change.

Isolezwe reported that the suspects, who cannot be named, were arrested on Friday after Shoprite had received a lot of complaints and subsequently launched a private investigation.

The suspects would allegedly not return all the customers change when they checkout. They would also scan items which not purchased by the customer, so that they could take the money of customers who didn’t take note of their receipts.

Shoprite also offers money market services where customers can send money to their relatives or friends. The accused would withdraw the money before it got to the intended recipients.

Speaking to DRUM KwaZulu-Natal SAPS spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, confirmed the arrest of the three suspects who are facing charges of theft.

“Charges of theft are being investigated by KwaMashu SAPS. Three suspects aged between 26 and 32 were arrested on Saturday after they stole cash from customers. They appeared at the Ntuzuma Magistrates’ Court on Monday,” she said.

The Shoprite media enquiry department said they cannot comment on the incident because the police are still investigating, but customers who suspect anything should call the customer care line number 0800-01-07-09.
