The University of Pretoria has confirmed a student passed away by suicide on Tuesday at a private residence.

Speaking to DRUM, University spokesperson Rikus Delport said the family has been informed and that the South African Police Services are currently investigating the circumstances.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and friends,” he said.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Pieters said that on Tuesday at approximately 23:10 police were called to the scene at an off campus residence where the body of an 18-year-old male was discovered.

“On arrival, police found the deceased hanging from the door with a belt tied around his neck, an inquest docket has been opened,” Pieters said.

Delport said students who feel under pressure, anxious or who face any difficulty of a personal nature, should immediately reach out for support.

“The University of Pretoria has 16 psychologists across our campuses available to help our students. In addition, students can call the 24-hour UP crisis line as well as the Careline.

“The Student Counselling Units on the different UP campuses will immediately assist students in need. UP also has an agreement with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group to provide students with 24-hour support. Students in residences are encouraged to contact their house parents when they need additional support.”

According to Rekord this is the second death suspected to be suicide to hit the University in less than two months.

Last month an 18-year-old female student died after she allegedly jumped off a building, falling to her death. Police found an alleged suicide note in her room.
