At least four children have been killed at Höerskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark after a building structure collapsed this morning.

A staff member at the school confirmed the incident but couldn’t say much more.

“I can’t give any information until emergency services are done assessing the situation,” she told YOU.

So far, four fatalities have been confirmed – all allegedly pupils at the school. Approximately 20 others have been injured.

“I’m not at the scene, but I receive basic updates from my paramedics with this regard,” Meiring said. “At this stage, we are not too sure which structure has collapsed as emergency services are still assessing the scene and treating pupils.”

According to an earlier News24 report, it was a walkway that collapsed and several people had been trapped under the rubble.

People have been warned to avoid the area. Another report suggests parents have been told to collect their children from the school.

Meanwhile, Vanderbijlpark residents have taken to the Facebook group, Vaal Traffic Network to share photos and messages of support for the victims and the EMS services at the scene.
