A 20-year-old woman gave birth to twins — 26 days after giving birth to her first child.

According to Fox 59, Arifa Sultana from Bangladeshi gave birth to a baby boy in late February.

After a normal delivery mother and baby were discharged from the hospital. However, less than four weeks later Arifa was back in hospital.

“She came to the hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain,” said Dr Sheila Poddar, a gynaecologist at Ad-Din hospital in Dhaka.

Doctors performed an ultrasound and realised Arifa was still carrying twins.

She had a condition called uterus didelphys, meaning she had two wombs.

The condition happens during female development. Typically the uterus starts out as two small tubes that normally join to form one larger hollow cavity, reports The Guardian.

In rare cases the tubes don’t join completely but develop into separate structures.

Buzzfeed reports that Arifa’s first baby and the twins were conceived at the same time but grew in separate wombs.

According to doctors, her condition wasn’t detected because she didn’t get an ultrasound examination before her first delivery.

Doctors performed an emergency caesarean section on Arifa and safely delivered a baby boy and girl.

“All three children are safe and healthy,” Dr Poddar said. “The mother is also fine.”
