Pietermaritzburg - Negative reviews are flooding the Internet, with fanboys and fangirls cussing the Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice movie. Now many have opted to watch the almost sold-out film in 2D or even 3D, but the pinnacle of watching the movie — that might even push up its ratings — is to experience it in 3D in a 4DX theatre.Recently featured in The Witness, 4DX theatres by Nu Metro have been introduced to KwaZulu-Natal, second in Africa behind the first theatre in Cape Town, which opened in December. The 4DX theatre offers movie-goers a multi-sensory ride throughout the entire movie, allowing them to feel more a part of the movie. The 4DX uses motion, vibration, water, wind, lightning, scents and more. Watching the ‘BvS’ flick in 4DX 3D, adds a new depth to the film, literally.SPOILER ALERT: The film follows the storyline of the two aforementioned iconic comic legends beating each other to pulp before taking on the sinister villain, Doomsday, created by Superman’s main antagonist Lex Luther. Creating hype for the upcoming Justice League movie due in 2017, scenes of the rest of the team including Cyborg, The Flash, and Aquaman are enough to rev up fans through short sequences. While the story is weaker than the box office hit masterpieces of the Batman series by Chris Nolan or even other films featuring Henry Cavill’s Son of Krypton, watching the movie with an open mind, low expectations and especially in 4DX give the film a lift.Still getting used to Ben Affleck’s Bat of Gotham, with a much weaker Batman voice.Big hits and ground-stomping action, seen as mediocre in a regular theatre — judging by fans’ reviews — offer a seat-jolting thrill, not surprising as the price of a single seat in the 4DX theatre costs in the region of R70 000 to produce. The highly anticipated, superhero action film is enhanced by the effects of the theatre and offers a one-of-kind experience to view. Like scenes of many a man’s new woman-crush, Wonder Woman played by Gal Gadot, appearing for the first time in the film in her full costume, after the dust settling, adds new dimensions to her on-screen beauty through smoke effects. Of course producers could have done more with the effects of 4DX for the movie, but the theatre maintains that it is offering a different experience to the film. While 4DX internationally is in infant stages for the film market, we can only expect the experience to get better with time. After watching the movie through this experience, only positive comments can be made. The 4DX theatre is highly recommended for those comic fans that have yet to see the film and look past the negative criticism bestowed upon it. The only 4DX theatre in KwaZulu-Natal is in the Pavilion in Durban, but the short drive from Pietermaritzburg to the coast for the experience of it is well worth it. NOTE: Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice carries a 13 age-restriction, even with a parent, children under that age will not be allowed into the theatre. Reminders about 4DX: Pregnant women, disabled seniors, those with heart, back, or neck problems; and those with motion sickness, epilepsy, or other sensitive conditions are not allowed inside the 4DX theatre.
