Pietermaritzburg - By far the most innovative and unique smartphone released in 2016 — the LG G5 has been recently released to the South African market.

Fresh off winning 33 awards at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona earlier this year, the G5 could be the best Android device to be released this year.

LG broke through the norms of producing a regular flagship smartphone and have conceptualised a new way we communicate, capture moments in our lives and interact with other technology around us.

The G5 is the epitome of a smartphone today, encompassing the essential features demanding in the market, from low-end and first-time users to the most advanced and nitpicky of earlier adopters.

It’s seemingly hard to argue against a device like the G5, but one thing is for sure, LG have made improvements threefold with launch of the G5 from previous models of the flagship devices.

Starting with the look and feel of the device, the G5 features more curved edges to its design for a better grip than any other device available among slate-form smartphones.

One of the most marketed and key features of the G5 is that the bottom part clips off along with the battery and allows for the add-on of accessories called “Friends”, from extra battery life to more powerful features for the camera and Hi-Fi accessories.

The Witness will soon feature the range of accessories for the G5 — watch the paper for more.

The device features a 5,3-inch multi-touch display at a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels, more than sufficient to watch high-quality videos.

Let’s face the fact — taking a selfie is one of the most crucial features in a smartphone today.

And taking a selfie with the G5 made me look better than I’ve looked in my whole life — some may call it vain, too enhanced, not natural, or even “photo-shopped”, without even using the computer program itself).

But in reality the G5 gives its user the confidence to know that every time they pull out their device to take a selfie — they’re capturing the best possible image of themselves.

Even without the beauty mode of the camera on, the G5’s facing 8 megapixel camera is able to produce sharper and brighter images, as if they were taken with the rear camera on the device. The fingerprint scanner, sleep and wake-up, power on and off button on the rear also act as a shutter for the selfie camera, for even easier capturing of images.

But let’s not forget the primary dual cameras — one 16 megapixel camera with another 8 megapixel for a further depth of field when taking pictures — just to clarify, yes, this device does have three cameras — one on the front and two on the back.

The primary cameras produce better images than any previous models of the G series but while the G5 can capture images in low light, pictures captured in good lighting always make for the best images — an argument that could be made with any camera existing today, but rest assured the G5 gets the job done.

Another outstanding feature of the device is its battery life. The G5 optimises its 2800 mAh battery to last. Even on the three percent battery with low usage on network, the device could last up to a day. Furthermore, its fast-charge socket allows its to charge 83% of its battery in just 30 minutes, what’s more is that socket is not an expensive accessory but comes in the G5’s box.

The G5 also uses a Type-C 1.0 reversible connector to charge, which makes it easier for users to connect their charger without the hassles of the up and down reversals when trying to plug the phone in. Just remember to carry the cable on the go in case you need some extra juice.

Under the hood the device features a dual-core 2,15 GHz processor, 32 gigabytes of internal storage, upgradeable to 200 gigabytes on microSD and 4 gigabytes of RAM.

The G5 comes loaded with Android’s Marshmallow operating system.

The LG G5 has to be one of the must-have devices of 2016 which caters to all the needs of its user and features in the high-end bracket of smartphones available today.

Expect to purchase the device for around the same price as flagship smartphones from major rival companies, however, the G5 is one of the best, if not the best, competitor in the the market today.
