DA far ahead in Cape Town

2011-05-19 09:46

Pretoria - The Democratic Alliance was leading the electoral race for Cape Town, obtaining 82.74% of the votes, with the ANC trailing behind with 13.13% by 09:00 on Thursday.

The race between the two parties was tight, with the votes of 215 106 people counted so far. The registered population in the metro is 1 745 853.

The ANC sought to win the key metro in the Western Cape from the DA.

The metro was the only one for which the ANC publicly announced a mayoral candidate, Congress of SA Trade Unions provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich.

The DA's mayoral candidate is Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille.

      PiXeL_NiNja - 2011-05-19 10:38

Maybe telling the coloured that cape town is oversaturated with them wasnt a good idea, either that or CT residents are happy being the only functional province in terms of service delivery etc.

      Marcell - 2011-05-19 10:41

FIFO snr: help the poor from Mitchells Plain. Be an example of what an ancESTOR member is. Maybe next time they will vote for the ancESTOR party.

      7thFloor - 2011-05-19 10:41

@Zizo Snr Im sorry to hear you feel the struggle continues in Mitchells Plein. Maybe its a matter of stop trying to fight the DA control, and be proactive and work together with your DA councillor to improve your community.

      tommo - 2011-05-19 10:43

@Zizo Snr - don't pretend the ANC actually have ever tried to do any kind of significant effort to uplift poor in Mitchells my friend. We are not so stupid, we know ANC is Africanist elitists who care nothing for colored communities. ANC would stab in the back when it suited, and your president is a criminal who lies, his close friends like those guptas and sheiks are a den of vipers.

      Perfume - 2011-05-19 14:44

@Pixel, the Association were flippin stupid to have thought the Coloureds were going to vote for them!!!!

      Christo Stone - 2011-05-19 18:37

Maybe one day we can share in that in Pretoria :( I'm really upset ANC won Pta...they are doing a shitty job here (as in most places).

DA only talks, no actions. I'm not surprised of all the comments made here. WC townships are suffering, all they do is bad talk ANC. You start focusing what DA has done, not what it has said. Coloureds they'll continue to strike for service delivery, while Zille is pointing fingers at Zuma. Wake up people, and stop thinking with the color of your skin. @Gallows, Western Cape is an example of failure in five years. I wait to see the future of De Lille in DA, very interesting that she left her own party that was a promising rival of ANC and DA and joined DA.

"The race between the two parties was tight, with the votes of 215 106 people counted so far. The registered population in the metro is 1 745 853". Wait a minute..... 215106/(1745853x0.45 [45% voter turnout]) = 27.4% of votes counted. Most of these are from small suburbs wards. da must hold on to that bottle of champaigne and wait for results from Langa, Khayelitsha, Cape Flats, etc. Dont celebrate on 27.4% of votes counted....

      Vive la Revolution - 2011-05-19 10:49

Even if this was true (which it definitely isnt); whatever regard the DA does have for blacks in WC is infinitely more than WHAT YOUR OWN PARTY HAS FOR ITS OWN PEOPLE IN ALL OF SOUTH AFRICA.

      Ingie - 2011-05-19 10:49

The DA has been trying to fix up all the Sh%% the ANC started, which is nothing. The DA has worked hard to get where they are and the ANC they get carried each election and promises never met. They lied to all their supporters all the way to the voting stations. I quote Zuma yesterday, " I want these roads tarred, I want running water here and I want electricity here. Instead of wanting do the F&^&%% job. AH...its your people you are letting down.

      Spoofed - 2011-05-19 11:53

      zama.mbhele100 - 2011-05-19 12:39

      Aluicius Jones - 2011-05-19 14:00

Well - in my area where there are blacks and whites living - the DA delivers service to all. Our councillor was just made an alderman for his impeccable service to his community. They even picked up the garbage yesterday.

      whatashame - 2011-05-19 14:32

Capetonians have experienced service delivery, thats why they voted DA back. The rest of the country are still being promised that experience. All the claims that DA service delivery is just a scam have just been flushed down the toilet. DA has done more for WC in the short time they have been there than the ruling party has done for the rest of the country. 17 year and the ANC have only delivered to a few.!!! Fortunately the voters have experienced ANC as well as DA governance and guess who they decided was better at delivering.

      Dean - 2011-05-19 15:43

The DA are not authors of the present service delivery. They inherited it and with the help of the ACDP they took over from the ANC, but gave the ACDP no credit for what they did. I come from Durban which was ANC lead and the services are better there and they are more sutainability conscious, more environmentally geared up. The IRT was designed some 25 years ago and in early 1990's was going to be a light rail as part of the Olympic Bid. The DA cannot claim any success for it. It was all initiated by the World Cup, which was an ANC driven bid. The road sytem in Western Cape is the worst I have come across as a transportation Engineer and the DA has done little to improve it. DA can thus not claim sucess for service delivery. They can claim sucess for scare tactics and the ANC's own infighting leading to their demise. The influx of people from other provinces will not help as the National Govermnment is unlikely to give more funding for that cause due to a DA victory so DA will have to increase rates to pay for services. Will they then be so popular? I forsee tougher times ahead, not better.

      Jacques - 2011-05-19 16:57

@Dean Then why is it that Cape Town is the only city with such a bus service? If it came from the ANC because of the world cup, why dont I see it here in Pretoria? I got to Cape Town often for me, if the ANC are responsible for that city, then I am even more peeved that they havent done the same here. Nuff said.

  • The All Seeing Eye - 2011-05-19 10:00

Thats more then two thirds, I`ll be voting for the ANC next time to even things up and to keep the DA on there toes.

      wade.balsdon - 2011-05-19 12:13

i think voting for parties to keep other parties is a little outdated, we need to voted for the party that will get the job done, A one party state is great, provided it is the right party.

      Plato - 2011-05-19 14:16

@wade.balsdon. What do you mean? Like the old National Party? - 2011-05-19 14:34

A one party state is a dangerouos thing. A very dangerous thing. That's how major laws get changed! That's how apartheid got written to law in this country! Democracy needs a strong opposition. This is very much the case at a National level and not at a local level though all seeing eye. It's a noble thought you have, but the democratic cause has a way to go before the ANC would need votes to help with its opposition duties! Many are looking forward to that day!

      Jacques - 2011-05-19 17:01

Power Corrupts, Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely. Healthiest form for a democracy to have is a ruling party with 40% of the votes, opposition with 39% of the votes and 20% for the other parties. This keeps everyone in check...well, most of the time :P

Now you can see the Madam did not have woodwork eish if you cant even past woodwork Malema how can you even think about taking Cape Town from our MadaM.Soon it will be the Republic of the Western Cape.

      Gallows - 2011-05-19 10:17

We can dream hey - but Zille should run for President. Why only try to help ourselves, when we can help the entire country be better by ousting the corrupt ANC.

  • Hane - 2011-05-19 10:11

why because they are using there God given intellect? They see the bigger picture and not the one with empty promises. They are voting for a party with grounded morals that are not based on racism.

  • Nintendo - 2011-05-19 10:12

  • laura.baasch - 2011-05-19 10:13

Easy tigers - they counting white suburbs first by the looks. Wait till they start tallying langa, khayalitsha and gugz.

  • MetEishYa - 2011-05-19 10:16

    I love the colour BLUE

  • Akasha29 - 2011-05-19 10:16

Moved to the Western Cape a year ago from Gauteng, the best decision I ever made, you can honestly see what the DA does for their people, coming from Gauteng ruled by the ANC I will never go back... Viva DA....Happy days are here again!!!!

  • Sunshine - 2011-05-19 10:16

@Thabsion.ANC at least the "blacks" as you said it in cape town are better off than else where in the country. Anyway DA you rock and we capetonians will always have the province at heart first!!! NO ANC IN THE WESTERN CAPE YIPPPPPPPEEEEEE!!!!!!

  • Linley Damons - 2011-05-19 10:16

Hey tony "when i am mayor"hey right!!!!

  • Martin - 2011-05-19 10:17

A great read about Zille when she won the WORLD mayor award in 2008. I'm not sure many ANC supports actually know this about her. take a read:

      saabnut - 2011-05-19 11:49

Good intentions Martin, but the sad part is that the bulk of the supporters probably can't read...

  • AndV - 2011-05-19 10:17

Zille for president!! You will see SA the most prosperous in the world! Away with these hooligans raping our country in the name of freedom - like the rest of dark Africa!

      schmurtle - 2011-05-19 11:48

i think lindiwe should rather be the president and hellen maintain her ability to keep the democracy strong.

      SeanJ - 2011-05-19 15:48

yea i also dont think helen should put herself up for president, she can stay in charge of DA but give the presidency to someone else. like lindiwe or de lille.

  • call a spade - 2011-05-19 10:18

Da madam is taking da anc to da cleaners in da Western Cape. WHOA !!! This is sooo sweet!!

  • wayne - 2011-05-19 10:18

    Zille for presedent!

  • Muzi - 2011-05-19 10:21

Shows we vote on emotions and race rather than "Service Delivery", "Corruption", etc. P d Lille was on the news after employing 5 of her family members. She has been very loud about "Cadre Deployment" policy of the ANC. Cadre Deployment is a correct policy accepted worldwide in politics from east to west. But the problem is Jobs For Buddies and Family. You can appoint capable people from your own party but ETHICS are at stake when those people are too close to you (family, friends, etc.). So, the da is already making the ANC's biggest mistake and the electorate in the da is as blind if not even worst.

      Felix - 2011-05-19 11:18

      You guys are crazy, hahahahahahaha....

      Wix - 2011-05-19 11:57

Afrika, what the hell are you on about???

      Plato - 2011-05-19 14:25

@Muzi. You are totally right. But I can tell you this, if it is found that she or anyone in the DA appoint family members they will be out. Watch the space...

      Badnews - 2011-05-19 20:25

      Another clear brain!!!

  • Tc - 2011-05-19 10:21

My dear Black Capetonians (and elsewhere) that have rejected the ANC, You have given us Non-Blacks real hope for the future of SA! You have rejected the lies and insults. You have rejected the manyis and Malemas and the others. You have decided for yourself. With your vote you have given us all HOPE that there is a future in this beautiful country. Thank you Brothers & Sisters. Let's move forward together!

      Rugbysemoer - 2011-05-19 10:31

most of you are rather ignorant, all you have done is put liars and thiefs in charge and now they are going to take more of your hard-earned money. NObody actually won, the DA is no different, Cape Town will become an even more expensive city to live it, and the people will be even more divided. Expect trouble in the future!!!!

      Almaki - 2011-05-19 10:46

@ Rugby: How do you figure that? Do you realise that the Western Cape actually had the least protests in the country over the past 4 years? If you want to see trouble, just look to the ANC stronghold provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West province.

  • goldilocks - 2011-05-19 10:23

That the ANC actually is successful anywhere at all is just a case of voting based on colour and not the policies that will actually improve your life. So it is simply ignorance. Actually, it is in the ANC's best interests to keep the electorate ignorant, impoverished and uneducated: they are then open to manipulation (promises of what government will give them) or influenced by nonsense (ancestors, Madiba would be upset, or white's wanting apartheid back). An educated black middle class is the worst thing that could happen to the ANC; for survival it must ensure that this never happens.

  • george - 2011-05-19 10:23

The anc nationally has over 60% of the vote. In any democracy it is a landslide. Well done anc.

      goldilocks - 2011-05-19 10:28

Down from? We cannot expect the idiocy of ANC supporters to be remedied too quickly - especially when ANC policies are the primary cause of this idiocy.

      CURRENTLY ABUSED - 2011-05-19 10:38

The votes that been counted so far... wait till the end.

      schmurtle - 2011-05-19 11:54

yes, george because the people are scared shi%$less to vote against the anc as to not upset their ancestors. not based on service delivery.

      Boer - 2011-05-19 12:35

and every year the ANC gets less votes

      Princess - 2011-05-19 13:06

I don't mind if they won nationally, as long as they don't take my Western cape from me!!!!!! wa ha hah wela wela !!!!

  • Wayne - 2011-05-19 10:23

Now I'm going to have to think of a way to convince my wife to let us move from Dirtbin to Cape Town.

  • Bevan Buck - 2011-05-19 10:24

    Go DA, Zille you beauty!!

  • CraigColinRoyMcLeod - 2011-05-19 10:25

Well it makes sence, those living in a city run like a first world city, would be more inclined to vote DA having seen what they have done for them. And Cape Town Being voted the #1 Tourist city in the world, in the Trip Advisor global poll, helps. But the problem still remains, that majority will vote for the ANC which by all standards is completly corrupt and heading us to the same fate as all the other african countries have faced. ** Makes a note to move back to Cape Town ASAP. ;)
