DA trailing ANC in Mandela Bay

2011-05-19 10:25

Pretoria - The Democratic Alliance was still trailing the African National Congress in the tightly-fought Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality at 09:00 on Thursday.

The ANC had 50.93% of the vote, while the DA had 41.71%, according to preliminary results from the Independent Electoral Commission.

A total of 268 747 votes had been counted.

There are 569 470 registered voters in the area.

  • saabnut - 2011-05-19 10:27

We wait in anticipation- I hope the DA pips them- THAT will wake them up properly...

  • thobsion.ANC - 2011-05-19 10:30

    They will trail forever.

      wesleywt - 2011-05-19 10:35

Don't go and protest and complain about corruption, lack of service delivery or bling politicians when this is done. You have voted the ANC, you have to live with it. Stop stoning my car for your stupidity.

      DeonL - 2011-05-19 10:38

Never Say Never. If service delivery does not pick up in the next 5 years, more voters will change theire party.

      JJVB - 2011-05-19 10:39

@Wesleywt - thobsion.ANC will not, he too is probably a beneficiary of the anc corruption! Happy where he is...

      myancmyfutur - 2011-05-19 10:55

Its amazing that these idiots think we're voting for corruption, we are getting services, you're just watching too much DA propaganda on etv

      Pints - 2011-05-19 11:02

The ANC will continue to lose votes as as the electorate become more educated. There must be very little between your ears to vote ANC. If there was any sort of intellectual process happening, you wouldn't even consider a vote for them

      Gary S - 2011-05-19 11:13

@myancmyfutur - my friend, ANC corruption is not DA propaganda of a figment of the imagination, its hard cold fact! It is unearthed almost daily and to boot our beloved president has dirty hands as well - having escaped his day in court over a technicality and much political interference, not only casts a shadow over his innocence, but speaks volumes on his guilt. So lets go easy on claiming DA propaganda.

      wesleywt - 2011-05-19 11:26

@€myancmyfutur So 1600 open toilets that we the tax payer paid R40 000 toilet is the so called DA propaganda you are talking about? Corruption the ANC admits to? You are a bit slow.

      barryjoelm - 2011-05-19 11:38

      You're an idiot

  • Wayne - 2011-05-19 10:31

The ANC stooges can feel the breath of the DA right behind them. The time is coming for a total DA onslaught.

      wesleywt - 2011-05-19 11:29

@Mathaithai You are such a racist. You are a stooge because for 17 years the ANC has stolen from you. But like a stooge you return to get raided again. The ANC cares nothing for the poor, black people. They are only in it for the money. They are just using the poor's name in vain.

  • Tereblanche - 2011-05-19 10:31

Congratulations to DA's improved performance, but ANC remain your father and will continue to lead.

      Marcus - 2011-05-19 11:25

I have only one Father, and He is the Creator of the universe. The ANC doesn't even come close, so dream on...

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:15

What have you been smoking??? Is it something that the ANC grows???

  • CharlieSheen - 2011-05-19 10:36

The DA's support has grown significantly, while the ANC is loosing support due to their incapability to deliver on promises made, and corruption within. It's clear what the people are saying, the question is if they'll continue their support, swing more voters over and bring a second big change in South Africa's history through the power of their vote.

      mpeketula - 2011-05-19 11:05

The ANC support has seemingly decreased not because the DA is doing well but because of the COPE rebels.Self deception is not good you know.

      Mathaithai - 2011-05-19 11:23

During apartheid there was corruption! Unfortunately it was never reported as the media was controlled by apartheid machinery. Now ANC liberated you and you are to comment and say they are corrupt! Shame on you!!!!! All you whites are voting whites, come 2014 ANC will still be in power and you will start thionking of migrating to Australia and/or Canada.

  • Reaperman - 2011-05-19 10:37

Reading some of these comments, I cant help but ask myself... what part of this is the ANC supporters not getting??? You have only secured 50% of a so called ANC stronghold!!!!!!! wake up, even if the DA does not take the metro (this time around), the writings on the wall for the ANC. ... People are fed up!!!

      Craig - 2011-05-19 10:57

Wont a coalition for the DA work against the ANC in this case ?

      Reaperman - 2011-05-19 11:36

Nope, all indications at this stage is that they wil get a 50 + 1 majority.... sadly :( But at least there will be much more DA reps to keep the stealing, lying ANC in check

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:17

I agree but you know once a monkey will alwys be a monkey. The ANC supporters winge and whine all the time that they are not getting this or that but yet they will vote for ANC. It makes one thinkk..

  • Justin Schon - 2011-05-19 10:44

The word is getting there! DA took Knysna and soon will take PE by 2016 or even 2021 we will see the mind shift of the youth and the educated voters finally chose delivery over history! We not worried what happend 20 years ago. Neslon Mandela voted for freedom, today we need to vote for the future of South Africa. The day we have the ANC actually working hard to obtain votes is when we know politics are actually working! Always Vote No to corruption, No to racial policies, No to Economic theft and No to a Government State!

      Michael - 2011-05-19 11:49

No Justin, at that stage (2021) blind black voters who thought a racist white party can change its sports would have learned a lesson. . Why start to hug and kiss me now when there's elections, only to go back home in the evening and exploit your black domestic workers . Why learn only now that there exists poor people in the country if, in fact, you created the situation with your ancestors since 1652? Why... and...why, the list is endless. To the majority "so-called liberal-blacks-sympathizers" who spread their hipocricy in this forum...DO YOU think people are that stupid as you describe them?

  • Craig44 - 2011-05-19 10:45

Almost there DA... Bide your time... cANCer will destroy itself and the next election will be Victorious.

  • Will99 - 2011-05-19 10:49

Where is Maki? Now there is nobody to tell what a piece of sh*t he is! lol

      Matt - 2011-05-19 10:54

I was just going to ask the same thing. Maybe he's drowning his sorrows in some Saki, seeing how the City of JHB is going to be DA... along with Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban!!!

      Damask - 2011-05-19 11:08

Calm down Matt, I also want to see all our main cities turning blue, but lets not get ahead of ourselves, the day is still young and we do not want to be eating our words later

      cerveza - 2011-05-19 13:41

@Will and Matt - you must get up to date, Maki claimed to be 5 university students writing a paper on the ANC and was only on news24 to to fish for reactions from the "educated" people here

  • myancmyfutur - 2011-05-19 10:52

Victory is certain and the counting hasn't even started in the township. Less ya DA ya DA

      Bottom Line - 2011-05-19 10:58

DA votes are increasing, ANC votes are decreasing, it's a matter of when, not if. Not that I expect you to grasp this now, you will later.

      barryjoelm - 2011-05-19 11:39

      You're an idiot

  • Matt - 2011-05-19 10:53

SA is a young democracy and still learning... but voting can be so much easier! UK: I voted there in 2001. No matter what time of day you go, it takes no longer than 5 minutes. No public holiday needed. The stations open till 10pm I think. They have LOADS of stations though. Remember, the UK has more people than SA... NL: No public holiday, no queue (I couldn't vote in NL, the "uitlander" policy that the ZAR had still applies up there, but I often went with a voter to see how it went). You press a button on a computer and that's your vote. Results come VERY quickly, but can we trust a computer... Maybe because in Europe they have more voting stations, within smaller municipalities? (in Europe, a Borough/Council covers a town and a few villages - not an entire area like here - which I think is why municipalities overseas can deliver much better) Like: UK: I lived in Morley, small town / falls under the borough of South Leeds I think - yes, even the cities have separate "municipalities" NL: I lived in e.g. Veenendaal, a town - council covered only the town and a couple of tiny villages - same when I was in Culemborg, municipality only covered the town and a couple of outside villages SA: I live in Dawnview, suburb of Primrose, a suburb of Germiston, a city within the city of Ekurhuleni, which is part of Johannesburg... so, a suburb of a suburb of a city within a city, within a city... no wonder we have no service delivery!!!

      Pints - 2011-05-19 11:22

Regarding your comment "can we trust computers?", I put it to you that in Western Europe and the UK we can. Absolutely. However, given the levels of corruption in South Africa, I wouldn't trust the current administration with a button. You can barely trust them with a ballot box. We had an election and referendum in the UK a week or so back and, as you say, both Mrs Pints and I were in and out (with 2 small children in tow) in less than 5 minutes.

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:21

I agree with what you say but if you give these guys a small chunk to control they will still muck it up and they wont know how to spend the money correctly without corruption.

  • Muzi - 2011-05-19 10:53

two new multi-billion rand investements coming to PE soon made possible by the ANC in Coega IDZ (New Petro SA refinery and New Manganese smelter). People know the DA opposed the IDZ. People are not stupid!!!!

      Herman - 2011-05-19 11:01

i wonder how much the investors had to pay the ANC....

      wallace.ross - 2011-05-19 11:15

and we all know how big a failure the Coega project was.

      Dr Filemon - 2011-05-19 11:35

The aNc cannot provide a manganese smelter. their incompetent cadre deployment at eskom resulted in our electricty shortage that CHASED AWAY the Alcan smelter in Coega 2 years ago you blinded sheep! And the refinery still has not even completed - nor begun - its Impact Study

      barryjoelm - 2011-05-19 11:39

      You're an idiot

      Aleg - 2011-05-19 12:50

Wonder how many tenderpreneurs are going to benefit and how much delivery will actually take place. Malema for example was linked to a failed R2 million taxi rank (, and although payment was made in full, the roof collapsed, some labourers weren't paid for months, etc. His two companies were kicked off the project when they failed to deliver, and another company had to be brought in, and paid to complete the work.

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:22

How much corruption and back door business was done in these deals?????

  • Martin du Plessis - 2011-05-19 10:59

Wow, close race with only just under 1/2 the votes counted. GO DA!

  • GhengisKhan - 2011-05-19 11:18

The ANC is going to bus in 1 000 000 supporters from he Eastern Cape to squat in the Midvaal and vote for the next election.......

  • Deset Rat - 2011-05-19 11:21

If the majority of voters had voted ANC in Mandela Bay, then they are obviously happy with poor service delivery?

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:23

once a monkey always a monkey.

  • Mathaithai - 2011-05-19 11:39

I want somebody to tell me when last did he/she see Zille canvassing in the so called white areas? This because white will vote for her. She only wants to augment her votes from Black people. When she goes around there are no white people but yet they vote for her! Make you think twice poor Black people!!! You are being used! Whites will never love you, they only want your , period. After using you, then you are dumped untill the next elections. Again you will see zille carrying your child shoulder high when new elections come. Think again Africans, dont be dupped into a false sense of security by zille and her cronies. I wont vote DA, noma ka njani! I am poor due to whites and so my family and fellow Africans. Viav ANC Viva!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Ross - 2011-05-19 12:17

you are poor because the ANC spends your money on big luxury cars and parties.. but then again ANC supporters like you don't have the brains to figure that out.

      Kevin - 2011-05-19 12:56

You are an idiot still allowing hour heart to rule u rather than common sense. This municipality is bankrupt because of corruption, people were moved into RDP houses with no electricity and still have to relieve themselves in the bush. Still, people like you are blind to the realities of what the ANC is really doing to their supporters.

      Aleg - 2011-05-19 13:17

4 million taxpayers (most of them white), vs 15 million receiving state grants (paid for by the taxpayer)(very few of them white). How much corruption has been exposed within the DA and how much corruption has been exposed within the ANC? The Western Cape Provincial Administration was the only administration in the country to receive full marks and a clean slate by the Auditor General. Which party has been accused of the most greed, nepotism, corruption and poor service delivery? Do yourself a favour and read the article 'Why I left the ANC' By Mthokozisi Nkosi How can you make a statement like 'Whites will never love you.' I think it is time for all South Africans to take off their racist glasses, stop judging other people, and embrace all people of our magnificent nation. Together we can make a difference.

      Buck - 2011-05-19 13:23

Dude, you are poor because you are waiting for the ANC to give you all the stuff you want. Keep waiting and stay poor or get out there and make some money the way many black and white South Africans have, hard work and ingenuity. If the evil whiteys never came here in the first place, you'd still be hunting with a bow and arrow.

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:25

You are a monkey like the rest of them. Have alook in the Western Cape how many potholes you find? Have a look in the Eastern Cape how many potholes you can fall in???

  • T - 2011-05-19 12:01

Your results map and this article is very conflicting, because the results map reports exactly the opposite of this.....

  • ANNON - 2011-05-19 12:02

Its clear and obvious! Viva ANC.

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:26

      What are you smoking??

  • Marius - 2011-05-19 12:02

Voting for the ANC is like a chicken voting for KFC. At least you know what is waiting for you

  • Fulufhelo - 2011-05-19 12:13

you dont have to complain of services delivery, corruption and we don have to engage urself on protest against services delivery because you have voted fot ANC so u have to abide yourself with it an dont protest against ur ANC

  • SymbolOfLife - 2011-05-19 12:25

I live and by demographic voted in Pretoria. Those that say the DA will "never" win, they are slowly gaining ground. They may not win this time around, but with every election their numbers improve...go read the story about the tortoise and the hare...

  • MBruno - 2011-05-19 12:32

If the ANC falls below 50 % of the vote in Nelson Mandela Bay, a coalition of opposition parties is still a possibility, even if the ANC remains the party with the most seats in the council. In any case, gaining 40 % of the vote in a so-called ANC stronghold is already in itself a great result for the DA, whose overall nationwide share of the popular vote seems to be up by 8 percentage points compared to 2009 and now stands at 24 %. The next step for South Africa to become a true multiparty democracy is now for the smaller parties like COPE, which had a poor showing yesterday, to start gaining more votes among the black African majority so that overall support for the ANC may fall below 50 % over the course of the next two or three national elections. I anticipate there will be further splits in the ANC as the black nationalists like Malema clash with the moderates. The emerging black middle class will then turn to the moderate splinter groups in the polls.

  • LundiSA - 2011-05-19 13:26

If you really expect the DA to lead in the future, I become so scared and just have a oicture of "Whites Only". I a not a racist and am scared of whites, to be honest. I dont see them caring a bit about a blak person's well being. Even the delivery that the DA will be bringing on the table will be for "WHITES ONLY" I dont have any proble voting for any opposition party, in future, if I can foresee change when that party is on the seat. But white party, no ways. Back to square one. All the tenders and the vast land that the whites shared among themselves, and they excluded us to places such as Soweto, etc. Now they will drive us to Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

      APerson - 2011-05-19 15:28

Please for the love of God and all that is holy go to Cape town and go look at how places like "soweto" look there.. The poorest area in Cape town Looks better than the Richest one in Port Elizabeth... You see DA as A WHITE PARTY Because ANC IS A BLACK PARTY. ANC IS FOR THE BLACK MAN. Why is this about colour anyway? why bring race into it? DA IS FOR ALL.. Please go read up more, Go look at cape town and other DA ran municipals. This is not about color anymore. Its never been. The racist party is ANC. ANC has the only followers that say "if you against ANC you are racist". Stuff like that.. What kind of intelligent thinking is that? In other words if you can't think and decide for yourself you are racist? RACE needs to be taken off the table and ANC is the only party keeping it on. Because For the ANC the RACE Card is the only one they have to win

      Guy - 2011-05-19 18:30

You should be scared of yourself and your comrades not be scared of our whites. We have provided a lot to improve your life. What has the ANC provided? Empty promises.Think think before you do.

      mike - 2011-05-21 09:29

Lundi, who occupies the vast tracks of land in the former "home lands" like Trankei, Ciskei to name a couple? On the very same land commercial farmers I knew (before the nationalist government bought the land from them in an idiotic attempt to establish the "home lands") used to produce maize & many other crops & beef, mutton & wool for the markets which in turn helped feed the whole nation, now the very same land does not sustain the families occupying it. These people you fear are the very same that continue to feed the entire nation you should embrace them, love and embrace them. Zimbabwe used to be the "bread Basket" of Africa exporting food all over the world, now they rely on other countries for their staple foods

  • Guy - 2011-05-19 18:37

It does not matter who you vote for. If the party that you have always been voting for does not deliver surely common sense will tell you its time to change. We can see what the Western Cape looks like under DA rule. Its a pleasure to go there. When last has anybody been to East London? ANC run. Municipallity bankrupt.Have you seen what the town looks like? Filthy dirty. I lived there since 1984 but I have been living in Uitenhage for 8 years. Yes Uitenhage ANC run. Those that keep on voting for the ANC will never be satisfied with service delivery. You will wake up one day when its to late.Just under 500000 spoilt votes. This makes me wonder.
