Will 'end of world' ruin ANC party?

2011-05-20 22:22

Johannesburg - As the ANC gets ready for its victory party following its overwhelming win in the local government elections, will celebrations be ruined by the world inconveniently coming to an end on Saturday?

If Harold E Camping, an 89-year old Christian radio broadcaster in California is to be believed, then Saturday, May 21st at 18:00 is apparently the day that Jesus is coming back.

If proven true, the timing could be cruel irony for the ruling African National Congress as President Jacob Zuma has said the party would rule "until Jesus comes back".

After 97.1% of the voting districts had been counted on Friday the party's support stood at 61.9%, giving it 5 214 council seats nationally.

The Democratic Alliance took 1 396 seats nationally thus far, receiving 24.1% support.

The ruling party had won just over 21 million votes with the DA getting seven million.

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema found the idea of the world coming to an end in a few hours hysterical.

Throwing back his head in laughter Malema said: "I don't see us, with this power that we gained today, losing it tomorrow," he said.

Malema was in high spirits as he visited the election results centre in Pretoria on Friday.

When asked about President Zuma's comments about the ANC ruling till Jesus came back, Malema said: "The president was simply meaning that we will rule for many years."

Deejay Gareth Cliff tweeted "Transfer all your property to me if you really believe you'll be raptured when Armageddon rolls round on Saturday, or admit it's nonsense".

Cliff did not believe the world would end on Saturday as the expiry date on his milk carton was May 22.

Senior pastor of Rhema Bible Church Ray McCauley said he would spend Saturday relaxing at home with his family and preparing for Sunday service.

He would also be following up on the final results of the local government elections.

"As a person and as a church we don't believe in such human prophetic predictions because the Bible is very clear on this subject. No one knows the time and the date," McCauley said.

The Daily Mail reported that some Americans were making the most of their time left with "Rapture Parties" across the country.

Others organised "anti-Rapture parties" - with a tongue in cheek proviso that the events could be cancelled due to a natural catastrophe of some sort.

According to the publication, atheists had taken a more practical approach to the rapture by offering an insurance plan for pets that won't join their owners in heaven.

The company, Eternal Earth-bound Pets reportedly has 258 clients.

I think it may be a blessing. The thought of having to put up with the ANC's incompetence makes me think that the end is nigh - either way.

      Pryce Johnson - 2011-05-20 23:20

You do not have to put up with the ANC. Stop whining and emigrate. This country do not need ingrates like you.

      edvermaak - 2011-05-20 23:39

Emigrate? Ingrates? Nice words. Obviously you had a better education than Malema. Pity you could not put it to better use.

      hendrik.baird - 2011-05-20 23:41

or stop complaining and be raptured...

      edvermaak - 2011-05-20 23:47

@hendrik Was it not in the words of Churchill: I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter. I somehow think that sums it up for me too!

      eyrie - 2011-05-21 06:35

Malema sounds like hitler and Stalin and Verwoed-they were all so convinced their mighty regimes would never crumble---trust me --arrogance is always rewarded -not in the way you would hope but it is always rewarded---for the rest of us , stop with the racial slurs as it only makes this a worse place and sit back and watch the ANC come undone

      BigMoose - 2011-05-21 09:22

The ANC's world in Cape Town came to an end today. DA got 135 seats, ANC got 73. - 2011-05-21 10:24

Yay to Cape Town!!! I say it's "Cape Town, Europe or bust!!".....but, for now, it's not.... @Pryce Johnson....those of us who want to leave WILL leave in our own good time thankyou! ANYWHERE would be better than the INCOMPETENT 'leadership' in SA [let alone the hideous, barbaric crime!].......!! lets see how long before the non-service delivery protests start again..... but vote for the anc they will......

      4ecoSENS - 2011-05-21 13:39

All of you need better education. Read: The Shock Doctrine by Prof. Naomi Klein and then you will understand what it is about.

      Mswati - 2011-05-21 16:41

Emigrate but do not annoy your neighbours by posoning their dogs

      lotus.lindi - 2011-05-21 21:35

Just come to Cape Town. You'll feel as though you've been raptured, even though you haven't:-)

  • Jack - 2011-05-20 23:41

Harold Camping is much like Julius Malema, both are dangerously threatening but lack knowledge and wisdom. Camping has it so wrong. The rapture will precede judgement after a 7 year period of tribulation. He also believes that if Jesus does not return today then he is not saved. He obviously is not sure of his own salvation. Mr Malema similarly believe he is the chosen one to inflict fear unto the many peace loving citizens of this country. Both these guys are too old for their portfolios and must move on.

      edvermaak - 2011-05-20 23:50

hee hee! I'll congratulate you on the 22nd. Until then I shall err on the side of caution :)

  • Joe_Massahar - 2011-05-21 00:00

Not that I think that rapture will be over the weekend, it's just that I wouldn't trust Rhema or Ray McCauley's interpretation of anything. His is politically in bed with the ANC, runs his church like a for-profit organisations (living a millionaire's life-style), and he's a hypocrite (having been divorced twice). This dude is lost!!

      zaatheist - 2011-05-21 04:33

Awwww!! Come on. All religions are about profits making. If there was no money in it they would have died out centuries ago.

      william.botha - 2011-05-21 05:41

Yep zaatheist, Ray McCauley is an expert in reeling in the cash, and they have the nerve to mention what he will be doing Saterday. Strange they didn't mention Angus Buchan, the latest addition to the list of fake parasites in SA.

      tryanything - 2011-05-21 07:35

Trust Angus more than Ray though

      zaatheist - 2011-05-21 07:40

What I don't get is how somebody can believe this nonsense yet still manage to dress themselves in the morning.

      soutpiel - 2011-05-21 10:32

zaatheist you are spot on! The Catholic Church is the best and oldest example of organised crime there is, the Vatican is a treasure trove of greed and plunder, centuries of theft and murder in gods name

      capetonian - 2011-05-21 14:18

The "god" business has been a good business for many centuries - you just have to look at the financial success of the Catholic church....

      Gatta - 2011-05-21 18:59

@william.botha - check your facts before you open your mouth. Ray is NOT in the same league as Angus Buchan. Angus is actually doing the work of God, unlike Ray who is enriching himself off his congregation.

      william.botha - 2011-05-21 23:31

Gatta, there are no "facts" to check, Angus Buchan is a vile human who uses religion to enrich himself. Have you got ANY idea what uncle Angus Buchan's takings were? Millions. I'm an atheist, so I see through these slimy people. If you paid any money to go and listen to his drivel, you wasted it, and he is living off the proceeds from gullible superstitious humans.

  • Duke Potgieter - 2011-05-21 05:30

Peace be with the reader. Yes, the party is over. I have returned as promised. Now is the time of judgment. I am Duke the faithful witness(see rev1:5)

      william.botha - 2011-05-21 05:47

Duke, repeating something over and over is evidence of obsessive compulsive disorder. It could be inheritable, can be caused by extreme trauma, or substance abuse, especially amphetamines. Which is it with you?

      tryanything - 2011-05-21 07:33

Wait for a good islamic government Its Coming....They will call this country to order

      Creeky - 2011-05-21 07:43

And when you woke up Duke... the cat has pisssed in your!

      Jack - 2011-05-21 09:08

Duke , dude, if you want to see a straigt out of the hip witness go to word 4 today.

      motsokwane - 2011-05-21 12:01

Hey! Duke, this is how I see it.Yes the party of campaigning for local elections giving false self inflicted promises is over(refering to Helen,Patricia),I have returned as promised(refering to the ANC).Now is the time of judgement(refering to the coloureds).Pease be with the Citizens of RSA,the right party is holding the steering wheel.

      capetonian - 2011-05-21 14:23

An individual who hears voices in his head would be diagnosed today as suffering from schizophrenia. Religion is the name you give to a group of these individuals.

  • eyrie - 2011-05-21 06:32

I can't help but think with this overt display of arrogance by Malema and the ANC that somewhere and someplace they are going to come undone--Hitler said the same about the the third reich-Stalin Bonaparte Verwoed et al all arrogantly stated that their regimes would last the test of time---I geuss the ANC as the new kid on the world Stage(and 100 years is young)that they will be next in the judgment of the powers that be----WATCH THIS SPACE ARROGANCE IS ALWAYS REWARDED WITH A WHIPPING--don't believe me? just look at the almighty apartheid regime

      tryanything - 2011-05-21 07:39

Come on People ....Lets get some blankets out to the needy there....Blue ones Yellow ones..anything will help

      MoaningMan - 2011-05-21 08:25

Yes, but will it be within our lifetime?

      Hannah - 2011-05-21 18:55

Of course there will be change and it will come quickly, how do you think the world is going to support all these people not only here but everywhere and then you will see a big change in attitude cause then its do the right thing quickly or die... no time to worry about silly religion or cultures everyone will do their bit dont you worry.. these predictions that come from the religious people are of their own doing to the earth go forth and procreate and god will sort out the rest and see to it that there is enough food and blind does religion and culture make us...

  • Ai! Ai! - 2011-05-21 06:44

No! There will be no end to the world today. The only question is who's money will the ANC use for their party and will the have not also be invited?

  • kingkong - 2011-05-21 07:02

instead of spending money on the voters it will be a sushi and Jack Daniels party there are so many less fortunate people out there but goes to show carte blanche with our money .i was amazed to see the mayors car the other day ca 1 a toyota pruis isnt that now responsible spending

      tryanything - 2011-05-21 07:43

Thats why everyone must go and buy a blanket you choose the colour I prefer blue. Give it to the person who needs it most. pu the money where the mouth is.

  • Guy Snelling - 2011-05-21 07:50

Malema said: "I don't see us, with this power that we gained today, losing it tomorrow," Mr Malema, remember that God gave you that power and He can take it away any time He chooses.

      mike881 - 2011-05-21 13:34

A correction Guy, God did not give malema "that" power. It was the ignorant voters that did. It is now up to God to forgive them for their stupid deeds.

  • jjhvan - 2011-05-21 08:03

  • mal.emmer - 2011-05-21 10:53

Well if you believe in Jesus. tooth faeries (looks Irish), father christ-mass, the seven dwarfs in the first place then could just as well believe in chicken nicken and the end of the world..or that the ANCe can deliver on its promises....or that Zuma and Shaik did not connive....or that Mal Emmer is not really Malema's alto ego...or that the boss of the IMF had no previoius dealings with the hotel maid and on seeing her for the first time was so smitten and just stormed out of his shower and forced his.... into her...Ja, Ja, Ja Got to fush out now and buy some tins and bottled water for 1800...ja, ja, ja

Now I realize how this is going down, Rapture parties. Harold Camping secrectly has shares in liqour stores all over USA

  • mike881 - 2011-05-21 13:14

No ways will it interrupt their partying. They will all just continue as per normal in hell (where they all belong).

  • Johan - 2011-05-21 13:15

No, but the ANC will ruin the world if somebody don't stop them.

  • koliswa - 2011-05-21 14:21

I dont believe this for a second. God has never made it known even our death date... why would He let human predict the Judgement Day, His Day, Never. All humans should rather stay prepared for this day by accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal saviour, and not worry about the End of the world, because it will only end on Gods terms and conditions...... Koli Notshulwana,

  • disturbedmikey - 2011-05-21 14:26

We'll I'm guessing it will start at GMT +12, so that means we can watch it on the telly for about 10 hours before it hits us.

  • di - 2011-05-21 16:03

It would be nice if it did interrupt the party. Unfortunately it's not going to happen. The Bible says "no man knows the day nor the hour" Even Jesus didn't know, only His Father in heaven. BTW the Rapture and Armageddon are two distinctly different events Mr Cliff.

  • mhaga.sabe - 2011-05-21 16:51

Harold Camping must have many followers in our own prophets of doom who always see the end of ANC. The best students of the bible know that no one know the time and date for the return of Jesus Christ, JZ can teach Harold and his followers a lot about the second coming of Jesus. The ANC still has much more life as the voters have declared thru these elections. The DA is a promising official opposition and will continue to do so as long as they keep some black faces in their voting campaigns. Helen Zille makes much more sense that most of her followers, who clearly do not like her as a person but have to tolerate her because she brings more blacks to the DA and speaks an african language! The future is bright for SA and the ANCYL makes us relax as we have done our homework to groom them for the future! Julius Malema will make a very good President even for those who hate him, they will have to learn to love him!

  • paperrose - 2011-05-21 18:03

It was a sorry day when politicians started abusing the Bible and religion to serve their own ends. Politics and religion don't and shouldn't be mixed. The integrity of some politicians claiming to be Christians is doubtful when we hear that they still take part in ancestor worship at special occasions. The Bible warns us that no-one can serve two masters at once.It also teaches that pride comes before a fall: remember Nebucadnezzar?

      Hannah - 2011-05-21 19:03

Where have you been all your life and many thousand before you have done the same religion is politics and vice-versa its the religious that are the fools not to see it... ai ai ai you say the truth and you still dont see the relationship

  • Singo - 2011-05-21 18:25

Lets not believe false prophecies. For many decades the Watchtower and its members (Jehovah Witnesses) have been predicting many times that the world will end but it did not end. It breaks my heart to hear that some christians have burned themselves in church, left their jobs or sold their possessions just because someone said the world is ending. If we read Mark 13:32 and Matthew 34:36—No one knows the day and the hour that the son of man will come back.In Revelation 16:15, He will come like a thief in the night. Act 1:7 Jesus said to them, "The times and occasions are set by my Father's own authority, and it is not for you to know when they will be.

  • Mxhuma - 2011-05-21 20:48

Everyone with an ANC membership will be raptured to heaven according to the previous ANC pronouncements. The only part I really do not understand is this idea that the ANC should celebrate and have a huge party for the fact that the majority of people in this country have voted them in. They should ( the ANC) instead be talking about how they are gonna be delivering services to the voters - me included.

      tryanything - 2011-05-22 08:16

A very good point MX Now lets see The new Mother of the nation and JZ slug it out . A referendum should be held every three months to survey service delivery from the DA And ANC See How much good money they spend....

  • Veliswa - 2011-05-23 19:58

ANC is the time for service delivery no more corruptionotherwise DA will take over next time
