Zuma's ancestor threat ignored

2011-05-19 20:43

Pretoria - The Democratic Alliance has made inroads in an area where President Jacob Zuma warned that people who turned their backs on the ANC would have to explain themselves to their ancestors when they died.

The DA increased its number of seats in Tswaing, in North West from one in the 2006 local government elections, to seven in 2011.

The party said its improved performance could be attributed to it winning two black wards there - including Vrischgewagt township near Delareyville.

Earlier this month, Zuma visited Vrischgewacht where he reportedly said that people who turned their backs on the ANC would have to face bad luck and explain themselves to their ancestors when they died.

"It's like history that's happened here. A complete village changed to the DA," newly elected DA councillor Carin Visser said on Thursday evening.

Visser was head of the Sannieshof Inwoners Belastingbetalers Unie (SIBU), a ratepayers association, which took over control of basic services such as disposal of sewage and waste removal in 2008, claiming the town council was incapable.

Instead of paying rates to the ANC-led Tswaing municipality, residents place the funds into a SBIU fund, and the SBIU provides some of the services.

"It's been six years that I've been working here to resolve problems," Visser said.

"It made an impression on the black people. It became known to them that I was a woman who solved problems."

'We give you Vrischgewacht'

Earlier this year, community members from Vrischgewacht, an ANC stronghold of almost 4 000 voters, approached her.

"We don't ask you, we give you Vrischgewacht," she said they told her.

"The whole village decided they wanted to turn it around," Visser said they started with basics like refuse removal.

She said this all happened a day before the Independent Electoral Commission finalised its candidates' lists, so there was no time to add the village's councillor to the list.

She did not have any DA T-shirts left for the village as she had already "painted Tswaing blue".

Instead they decided to do as the Blue Bulls did, and used oxide to paint the whole village blue, from windmills, to fences, to walls and even trees, Visser said.

It was during this time that Zuma paid a visit.

Visser said when the community was told they could not ask Zuma any questions, they pulled off their outer layers to reveal blue t-shirts underneath.

Under administration

The Tswaing local municipality, which includes Delareyville, Ottosdal, Sannieshof, was placed under administration in mid-2010 in terms of Section 139 of the Constitution.

It has been an ANC stronghold since 1994, and in the 2006 elections, the ruling party received 78% of the votes and the DA 6%.

In 2011, the ANC is projected to get 85% while the DA has risen to about 11%.

monkey allowed to speak? dont fear what come out of idiots mouths...

      otiose - 2011-05-19 21:03

Congratulations to the people of Vrischgewacht! I'm sorry that the DA didn't get the municipality, otherwise they would have seen first hand the Zille magic we have here in Cape Town! Viva President Zille! Viva DA!

      Judgmental - 2011-05-19 21:40

The problem is; "if you watch the circus for long enough you'll become part of it"

      clark - 2011-05-19 22:09

      - Now the people just have to dispel the "till jesus comes" bullshite.

  • Yellow1 - 2011-05-19 21:00

To me it seems the ANC has improved its support here. They received 78% in 2006 and are projected to receive 85% in 2011. Am I missing something?

      POLLENYS - 2011-05-19 21:15

Just another example of the extremely poor election coverage. Telling me party X has 49% and party Y has 44% after 116,000 votes had been counted means nothing, What % does the 116,000 present? Even full results have no comparison to the previous election. Telling me the DA has won 12 wards also says nothing: 12 out of how many? ONIONS TO ALL INVOLVED.

      kaMazibuko - 2011-05-19 22:18

@polyns ure just stupid/dumb that's all. It's called live updates and tells u from the votes counted thus far which party has the most for an example u say after counting 10 balls from a pile 50% is blue and 50% is green that means 5 are blue and 5 are green....u understand ?????

      kaMazibuko - 2011-05-19 22:21

They can't tell u that 116 000 is from what Bcoz before they finish counting the votes they won't know how many votes are there, even if they track how many people have voted they still don't know how many ballot papers have been spoiled. Stop trying to sound smart and think for a second

      ckrummeck - 2011-05-20 09:00

How come on SABC 2 they could tell you what percentage of the votes had been counted (45% of votes have been counted in the EC)(which means that they must have known the total amount); but on the map on the web site, they didn't. All the map said was: "ANC leads with 49% of 100 000 votes counted so far". The coverage on SABC 2 was great, but on the website (which most people at work would have used), the coverage was poor.

  • jkoorts - 2011-05-19 21:09

  • Doug - 2011-05-19 21:14

Goes 2 show the people r waking up out of their slumber, realising that the anc r not for the poor.

  • Risen Ape - 2011-05-19 21:18

Just watch now how the religious crowd are going to criticizes Zuma for his belief in ancestors.

      edvermaak - 2011-05-19 21:19

And why not? I aint religious and I think what he said is ludicrous...

      Gatta - 2011-05-19 22:12

I don't consider myself religious, although I am a follower of Christ. What I do find sad is the fact that he has NOTHING to offer but threats and insults. And his supporters still follow him. THAT IS SAD!!!!

      Risen Ape - 2011-05-20 01:37

Edvermaak, if you aren't religious then my comment was not directed at you. Gatta, if you follow Christ you are religious and just as nuts as Zuma.

      Mark - 2011-05-20 09:05

Risen ape, you should simply call yourself APE. Christianity is not a religion. It is all about following Christ and having a relationship with God through Christ, that is what Gatta is alluding to.

      Risen Ape - 2011-05-20 10:37

Mark what are you on about. Christianity is a religion. "... having a relationship with God through Christ" What does that mumbo jumbo even mean? Why don't you just skip the middleman and talk to your imaginary friend directly? You see this is why I say you lot don't have the right to criticize Zuma. Your beliefs are just as nutty.

      poenskop - 2011-05-20 12:59

Because Christ IS God, APE. we talk to him directly.

  • j4truth - 2011-05-19 21:19

Ancestral spirits?? When a person dies, their spirit either goes up to be with the Lord or down to Hell (place of waiting for the doomed) No "ancesters" walk around here! These are impersonating DEMONS. Rebuke them in the name of Jesus and they will flee in terror!

      ShanMo - 2011-05-19 22:04

j4thruth- sorry, but the concept of the 'lord' and 'hell' is no more creazy then ancestors.... actually, the latter seems more believable to me!!

      william.botha - 2011-05-19 22:15

j4truth, you are a real joker

      poenskop - 2011-05-20 13:01

Amen J4truth, well spoken. It is given to man(woman) once to live and once to die and then the judgment. Period

  • Ruan Pretorius - 2011-05-19 21:20

      Michelle - 2011-05-20 09:43

LMAO, yeah me too. His a real IDIOT and so are the rest of the ANC CLOWNS!!!

  • POLLENYS - 2011-05-19 21:20

Excellent example in Vrishgewacht of people fed up with promises, non-delivery, corruption etc. turning to a white woman to be their saviour. Now if this can happen everywhere where there are dysfunctional municipalities the ANC will soon be sad history.

      edvermaak - 2011-05-19 21:25

Praise anything. God, Jesus, Mary, ANYTHING, praise yourself if you have to , but please..praise anything except the ANC, because I don't wanna have to wait THAT long for Jesus to come and rescue us :-)

      SDR - 2011-05-19 21:32

@edvermaak : seeing as you are not religious, kindly STFU!!!

      edvermaak - 2011-05-19 21:36

@SDR: YOu are missing the point friend. If I am not religious does it mean that I am disqualified from your cause. If you read my links you will see how happy I am for you.

      SDR - 2011-05-19 21:48

@edvermaak : make no mistake I did read them. Still there was no need for you to say what you did when you don't believe that it will happen in any case. Thanks for the support though.

      edvermaak - 2011-05-19 21:54

Hey SDR. I am sorry that I offended you. Handshake? I mean it. I love my God - just not he one that politicans refer to. They offend me and that is whay I a cynical of them.

      SDR - 2011-05-19 22:00

@edvermaak : Handshake it is. Same story here...

      edvermaak - 2011-05-19 22:05

      @SDR. Thanks friend.

  • Johan Kruger - 2011-05-19 21:24

As a DA supporter, I just want to urge the candidates to produce and do not let your supporters down. You will capitalise and increase your suport for the next election. The ANC could not do that, but kept on filling their own wallets.

  • ANC Ancestor - 2011-05-19 21:28

Showerhead is gonna have some explaining to do about lying to his supporters when he joins us

      Deon - 2011-05-19 22:45

@ ANC Ancester. You owe me a new chair you bum.Mine broke when I fell of it in laughter...

  • James - 2011-05-19 21:29

I would say they MORE than ignored it - they turned their backs on these liars and cheats. Its such a pity that the rest of the country did not wake up. Well, they have some years now to be shown why they should have voted DA - next time ANC, you will be shown up!

  • dask@k - 2011-05-19 21:35

  • Born To Fish - 2011-05-19 21:37

  • Herman - 2011-05-19 21:39

Why is uncle Jacob looking over his shoulder on this photo? Is he scared of the ancestors?

      edvermaak - 2011-05-19 21:42

No - he is scared of Julius (Ceasar) Malema who is about to oust him. The Romans had a different way - just stab or cut.

      Michelle - 2011-05-20 09:48

LOL, good one. JUJU and JZ. Dumb and

  • marisa.cronje - 2011-05-19 22:04

obviously the anc thinks its voters are a lot dumber than they actually are.

      edvermaak - 2011-05-19 22:09

Could the ANC possibly be that insightful?

      Gatta - 2011-05-19 22:18

Marisa, sadly some are as dumb. If you had to go by the numbers being released, the ANC has still taken many a municipality. SAD!!!

      Rustman - 2011-05-20 08:41

There are other black parties to vote for if you don't want to vote for the ANC. I cant think that anyone with an IQ higher than a bricks IQ would vote for the ANC.

  • rrcatto - 2011-05-19 23:08

If this story was true, why would the ANC get 85% of the vote?

  • Mo - 2011-05-19 23:21

Today is but one heartbeat in the history of SA. Do hope the DA can prove to Vrischgewacht people they made the right choice. Go for it Councillor Carin! You'll be part of changing the history of the future.

  • peaceonearth - 2011-05-20 00:59

what did they think? that they were back in the year 200bc? Happy to know that the ANC are aware of the fact that most people are not quite as ignorant as they used to be, its called education and evolving.

  • stukyster - 2011-05-20 01:17

Wait, an individual does something great in her community, and this site's posters attribute it completely to the DA and Helen Zille. You're no better than the ANC trolls. Go read the article.

      Doc Walkers - 2011-05-20 02:03

Dude, are you kidding me? There is reference throughout the story of the DA. Carin Visser is a member of and now councilor for the DA. She is clearly a pretty amazing woman but those are the kinds of people that Helen Zille attract. People who do the right thing for the right reason. Good leadership is to inspire your people to think for themselves, to enroll them in your ideals and then let them get on with it. Do you think that Carin Visser would have done this under the leadership of Zuma? Do you think the ANC would have created an environment where an individual can thrive and make a difference? It's called team work and the DA members are clearly a great deal more successful at it than the ANC.

      Michelle - 2011-05-20 09:51

      Well said Doc Walkers....

  • Bosluis the Tick - 2011-05-20 05:18

Next thing we will find Zuma seeking a new wife in the area to make inroads in Vrischgewacht

  • kilo39 - 2011-05-20 05:46

this is proof that there are still thinking people out there. to the leaders and the people of the village, congratulations for recognising the death of a once noble ANC, for not expecting the proverbial handouts, and for working with an organisation that really is committed to aiding the upliftment of all people. as reward, I hope your village receives investment from the private sector and that you truly become the envy of those in this country who are blinded by the false promises espewed by the ANC. Good luck to you all and may you be blessed with abundance.

  • citizen36M1 - 2011-05-20 08:28

I think the ancestors will understand that while still on earth, these people wanted a better deal and could only get this by voting for a different party. Watch out ANC top structure, especially Zuma; those who lied to the voters for the past decade or so have much more to answer for. I think the ancestors are going to grill you guys - (and I am talking about the fellow with the fork who cooks people).

  • dylan stuart botha - 2011-05-20 08:32

well done to the DA and Carin Visser. get stuck in, proactive and help all the people. what great results can be achieved.

  • ckrummeck - 2011-05-20 09:07

Why doesn't the IEC go digital and allow voters to appear in person and follow the same process, but instead of writing an 'X' onto a page, have a touch screen, in a private voting booth, where you can select your choice. It's still totally safe in that it can't be hacked, because it's not online; but the benefits are massive. Each ID Number registered can only vote once, no one can spoil a ballot, counting is done automatically, loads of time & money saved, etc. Basically, instead of IEC officials counting the paper vote and capturing them into a system, rather allow voters to directly capture there choice into a system. Results would be available almost immediately. It's time!

  • Chris - 2011-05-20 09:58
