WE all make use of ATMs from time to time and this has drawn a significant amount of attention from unwanted elements.

The action taken by criminals vary, and they are becoming more sophisticated. The normal modus operandi is distraction, and sometimes so-called “ineptitude” about the working of the ATM. They also sometimes make as if the machine is out of order, and become quite persistent when told to move away.

The point to remember when approaching an ATM is to make sure no one is standing close enough to observe you keying in your PIN number, so where possible cover your hand and the keypad with your purse or another object when typing in the PIN.

Criminals have changed their approach and often make use of well-dressed individuals to initiate their action, so be on the lookout for well-dressed individuals in the vicinity.

They have honed the art of card swopping to a well-oiled and slick operation, and invariably also make use of card cloning apparatus. All they require are a few seconds, after which they return the card with profuse apologies. Sadly however, the cloning has already been done, and they have free access to victims’ funds. Be alert and make use of the “mirror” strip above the keyboard to observe what is happening behind your back.

If there is a possibility you are being set up, cancel the transaction, make sure you remove your card, and before stepping away from the machine, press cancel on the keypad.

If possible, ask a friend or family member to accompany you to the ATM. Try to carry out your transaction when there are other users in the vicinity. In the case of withdrawals, always ensure that the money drawn is safely put away, and don’t just “stuff” the cash and slip into the back pocket of your jeans.

I hope these simple hints and tips will prevent unauthorised withdrawals. Take care, be alert, and stay safe. - The Safety Guy
