Beauty is ‘being the best’

2015-10-07 06:00

HAVE you ever wondered why children struggle with self-esteem and succumb to peer pressure? Let’s admit it, teenage years are difficult. It’s hard to feel beautiful, valuable and strong when you’re constantly comparing yourself to the world around you.

Fortunately, from a young age, my mom instilled in me that I was beautiful and unique. The truth is our children are going through a lot of emotions regarding their appearance.

We are living in an age of image-obsession, of ?the selfie, instagram and cyberbullying. As if being an adolescent is not hard enough, trying to discover and adapt to all the changes in your body, you have to conform to society’s ideas of what beauty is. As parents we have a responsibility to empower our children to be able to deal with such issues which could lead to low self-esteem and possible suicide. Social media has taken over our role as guardians and technology has gained power to reinvent and change our children’s appearances through photo-shop.

Going to school is not fun anymore because they are confronted by other children who tell them they are ugly and call them names. They feel lonely and don’t feel comfortable doing activities or trying new things because of the way they feel about their body, obsessing about losing weight, or about specific parts of their body, such as their complexion, face or legs.

My prayer for every teenager reading this is that you should know you are loved, that you are prayed for and that you deserve great things. Be your unique self because everyone else is taken. Your body doesn’t define you, you define yourself. Teen or not, this is something we wrestle with throughout our life.

The truth is, we can’t let our bodies define us, because we have the power to define ourselves. Take the time to love yourself, to focus on your strengths, and to be grateful for the body God has given you. While they are gossiping about you, focus on your studies and kill them with your smile and success, and then remember - you are the child of a king - live like it, after all what is a pretty face with an ugly heart. - Nhla Dlamini-Ngcoya
