SHOWING support for Mandela Day, Councillor André Beetge, MP Dianne Kohler Barnard and members of the local DA branch took a trip to the end of School Road where the Bhekulwandle area starts. There are dwellings there where 30 people of various ages and race live in a small area.

“We served the community with a pot of warm homemade soup and bread. Thereafter we supplied each occupant with tinned soup for later use,” Beetge said.

This event was followed by a clean-up in the open area-park towards the lower end of Kingsway near the trauma centre (next to the veterinarian) in Doonside, Amanzimtoti.

“The area is being frequented by the homeless and destitute who are directly responsible for the litter that consists mainly of empty liquor containers and newspapers, and every other possible article,” said Beetge.

He said that while the parks department recently facilitated in a request to cut alien vegetation in the area, it resulted in further litter being exposed. “We eventually collected a total of 67 full bags, supplied by Durban Solid Waste (DSW).”

Beetge said some of their group went to other events organised in Kingsburgh west (cleaning the park and assisting with food parcels), Isipingo (handing out clothing to children in the transit camp), uMlazi (painting a house exposed to fire damage) and Umkomaas resulting in a total 528 minutes of events being achieved. - Supplied
