TOURISTS to Amanzimtoti last week visited the Umdoni Bird Park and expressed their “disgust” at the state of the park.

“When a member of the public first came across the couple, they had passed the tea area and were down on the bridge. Upon her approach, they remarked that they have never been so disgusted in their lives. One woman explained that she is a tour agent from Johannesburg. The other visitor was from Germany. They showed the member of the public pictures of a bird park in JHB and explained that unlike the one in Johannesburg, this is an indigenous park,” Lee Lewis said.

According to Lewis, the man then asked if plastic is also indigenous, pointing to the old plastic bottles that were strewn about. “The member of the public said it has not been cleaned recently and invited them for tea. They said they would never sit on the filthy chairs, full of monkey mess,” she said.

The tourists then reportedly asked who ran the bird park and were told - the municipality. The woman said that the tourism board should not be promoting the attraction. “To top this, one of the pipes that feeds the pond was spewing foam and the sewage smell was terrible, discounting the fact that an aerator was working to ‘oxygenate’ the water at the time,” Lewis said.

Lewis said a group of concerned citizens have called meetings with municipal officials and Cllr Vincent Ngcobo (Ward 93) at the park on several occasions, but the untenable situation has not improved at all.

Ngcobo undertook the following at a meeting between himself and concerned members of the public:

• Requested capital to urgently remedy the water quality of the pond at the Amanzimtoti Bird Park.

• Improve the physical appearance of the sanctuary as it is, after all, an eThekwini place of interest.

• Involve the water sanitation department.

• Involve environmental affairs.

• Set up a committee of stakeholders involving, inter alia, representatives of Heartland Leasing and South Gate Industrial Parks;

• By virtue of this action, it will automatically be noted on the council minutes and therefore the city manager will be held accountable for the improvement of this sanctuary.
