Don’t confront intruders - warning

2015-07-22 06:01

AN Athlone Park resident had a lucky escape after a shoot-out with an alleged gang of armed robbers in the early hours of Tuesday.

Blue Security operations manager Brian Jackson said the two armed men gained entry onto the Ngobeni Drive property at around 3.05am.

“The men then tried to break into the home, but were disturbed when the resident went outside to investigate and spotted them. The robbers fired several shots at the resident who then returned fire. The robbers fled the scene. Fortunately, there are no injuries reported,” Jackson said.

Amanzimtoti SAPS attended the scene of the crime. Jackson advised residents not to confront intruders on their property or to go outside to investigate if they hear suspicious noises as intruders are often armed and dangerous.

“We advise residents to rather take the family and lock themselves in a and#039;safe roomand#039; in the home that has been pre-equipped with a spare cellphone and remote panic button, and to call their private security company and police for help from there,” he said.

Jackson advised residents to use a spare room or a bathroom as a safe room rather than the main bedroom as crime trends revealed that criminals have a perception that there may be valuables in the main bedroom.
