THE first day of October, coinciding with National Day of the Aged, saw the start of the fifth annual Golden Oldies Games.

The initiative, started by former Fever journalist, Heloise de Beer and Sharon-Ann and Errol Theron with local residents for the aged, gives the elderly in the community the chance to get together and participate in a fun series of games.

Six teams - Pointsettia Park, Residentia, Jabulani, Ezimangweni, Seniors in Action and Community - competed for trophies.

Addressing the aged on completion of the event, Councillor André Beetge said there has been an influx of people into the area and many have not yet registered for elections. He said they will assist the homes of the aged, by bringing in the IEC to assist with registrations.

He reminded elderly citizens of the upcoming eThekwini Christmas lunch on 4 November saying they can accommodate 600 people for this year’s event. Tickets will be dropped off at the homes for the aged.

Beetge added this year they have invited the Department of Health to provide free essential services such as blood sugar testing to attendees.

He thanked Mooi Hawens for opening its doors for this growing event and said that they will book the city hall for next year’s event, free of charge.
