ON day 16, Jacques Kruger was appointed the winner in the Galleria Mall, “Live inside and win the ride” competition. Initially five finalists entered the car, but only Nokwanda Makhaye and Kruger remained by last weekend, competing to win a Datsun Go.On Friday night, Makhaye was late by six seconds (her break only being 15 minutes). After viewing video footage by Galleria management and auditors, Kruger was announced the winner.Kruger says the competition has taught him to appreciate what he has in life. He did not miss the luxuries taken away from him. “I have not missed my cellphone or television for one moment - I missed spending time with my family,” he says.“Being removed from your loved ones is the hardest thing. We saw them once or twice a day, other days not at all, depending on the demands on the family.” He said the best part was that they were fed like kings - three meals a day and the food was great. “We even got dessert every day,” Jacques saying that Eagle Canyon Spur, Galleria, offered them anything on the menu. When asked if 15 minutes was a good break, he replied: “Fifteen minutes is a good break. You can do everything you need to do. “The thing is you have to have a plan of what you are going to do in your 15 minutes,” Jacques said. This is the tactic that ultimately led him to win the prize.“My goal for entering this competition was twofold, I wanted to see if I could do it and I did it. “The car will mean a lot to my family, I owed it to my family to bring home this reward. I am humbled and grateful that I was able to participate, the fact that I won has not sunk in yet. My mind is still in that little shelve where I had to keep it, to stay in the competition,” Kruger said.
